ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Administers and supervises the activities and personnel of an assigned Division. This may include multiple teams within the division.
  • Performs duties involving: instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards and coordinating activities; allocating personnel; acting on employee problems; processing Worker’s Compensation information; recommending new employees, transfers, promotions and terminations, issuing corrective actions; conducting performance appraisals and making recommendations for salary increases.
  • Assists with the long and short-range goals of the department.
  • Provides input on budget preparation and manages budget for the division.
  • Coordinates activities between the other police divisions.
  • Ensures that his/her assigned division completes required training.
  • Oversees, reviews, instructs and trains staff.
  • Reviews paperwork generated in his/her division.
  • Responds to high priority service calls with officers and coordinates special assignments.
  • Coordinates and participates in community outreach programs and events.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public.
  • Addresses personnel matters that may require varying levels of investigation and corrective action.
  • Responds to high priority calls and major crime scenes as needed to provide assistance and supervisory oversight.
  • Reviews various reports and records including incident reports, supplement reports, accident reports, booking reports, witness statements, activity sheets, various forms and records, training reports and affidavits.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Serves as back up to co-workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field required.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in law enforcement, to include two (2) years of Lieutenant level supervision.
  • SCJIS certification.
  • Firearms, TASER, and Defensive tactics training/experience.
  • Current SC Criminal Justice Academy Police Officer (LE1) certification.
  • Must possess advanced law enforcement training.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid South Carolina driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal criminal and civil law.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, guidelines and equipment used in law enforcement activities.
  • Knowledge of court procedures, introduction of evidence, rules of evidence and testimony and applicable laws.
  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the City.
  • Skill in implementation and enforcement of policies and guidelines.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and other specialized law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to use computers and various software programs, to include Word and Excel.
  • Ability to obtain DataMaster and RADAR/LIDAR certifications.
  • Ability to supervise and provide leadership to staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure, to include dangerous situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

SAFETY

Employee is responsible for adhering to all safety procedures and regulations established by the Department, the City and all State and Federal organizations. Any safety concern should be reported to a supervisor immediately.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force regularly as required to move objects and the following physical abilities and the following physical abilities: balancing, crouching, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. Must maintain physical conditioning to be able to perform all duties of a police officer according to departmental standards. Observes, inspects, or monitors the behavior of office or field personnel to determine and maintain compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Maintains the ability to perform all other duties of a Police Officer including making forceful arrests and firing a weapon. Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard South Carolina Driver’s License.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in an office with some travel in the field exposed to the outdoors in inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices. Employee is exposed to hostile and volatile situations and may be exposed to situations that are life-threatening.

Salary : $90,000 - $100,000
