PARKS MAINTENANCE PERSON

Job Description:
The incumbent under the guidance of the Parks Department Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the quality of the Public City Parks. This position ensures that the public has a safe and clean park environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.

1. Mow and weed-eat park areas on a regular basis.
2. Performs a multitude of maintenance and repair tasks including carpentry, plumbing, and concrete/masonry work.
3. Operate all related equipment and tools.
4. Performs other miscellaneous duties as required or assigned.
5. Ensure that the park is free of trash.
6. Maintain restrooms.
7. Ability to operate trash compactor truck or capable of learning.
8. Perform landscape duties as required or assigned including planting flowers, weeding, mulching the landscaped beds; planting and trimming trees.
9. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Minimum of one-year general labor work experience in construction or maintenance preferred.
• Must be proficient in the use of mowing equipment and operating a compactor trash truck.

Other Skills and Abilities:
The incumbent should possess knowledge of all maintenance equipment and tools. The incumbent must have good verbal and written communications skills as well as good organizational skills. Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. The incumbent must have ability, knowledge and skills to perform basic carpentry, plumbing and concrete/masonry projects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary.

The employee is occasionally required to lift more than 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and works near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is also exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles and is at risk of electric shock or vibration.
