Sewer Laborer

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs general maintenance of City owned infrastructure within the City's right of ways, utility easements and other City owned property. Performs heavy manual labor in the repair, construction, and maintenance of storm and sanitary sewer collection systems.

Hourly Rate: $33.52.70 after a 6 month training period.

Medical/ Dental/ Vision covered at 100% for the employee and begins on first day of employment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs heavy manual labor in routine maintenance and repair work to City storm and sanitary sewer systems. Includes inspecting, cleaning, replacing, and installing manholes, catch basins, culverts and appurtenances.

2. Operates heavy equipment, dump trucks, sewer vacuum truck, and other equipment used in repair and maintenance of City storm and sanitary sewer collection systems.

3. Operates heavy equipment and dump trucks in performing snow and ice removal operations.

4. Identifies location of sanitary sewer and storm sewer pipes in conjunction with J.U.L.I.E. locates.

5. Uses specialized sewer safety equipment including gas detectors and harnesses.

6. Responds to various sewer maintenance emergencies and is subject to call-out during non-working hours.

7. Assumes other duties as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Must possess or obtain a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL), issued by the State of Illinois, within ninety (90) days of employment.

· Must possess the physical and mental ability to safely operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, motor graders, and 2 1/2 ton trucks.

· Must be able to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and be available for twenty-four (24) hour emergency call out.

· Must have the ability to work in extreme summer and winter weather conditions.

· Must have the ability to speak, hear, write and communicate effectively and clearly in English.

· Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· Must be able to operate equipment and drive during day and night hours in adverse weather conditions.

· Must be able to stand and perform hard manual labor for long periods of time.

· Must have the ability to traverse rough terrain.

· Must have the ability to routinely lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds.

· Must have the ability to lift objects weighing 100 pounds, occasionally unassisted.

· Must be able to move, bend, squat, lift, carry, and stretch freely with little to no discomfort.

· Must be able to climb on/off machinery and equipment such as tractor, backhoe, dump trucks.
