What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crew Chief - Utility Maintenance position at City of Corsicana?
The City of Corsicana is seeking a qualified individual to lead a utility crew responsible for the installation and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection system infrastructure. This includes maintenance of water transmission lines, water mains, and sewer lines, along with related utility tasks.
- Assist with water taps, leak repairs, water/sewer main installations, sewer cleaning/unclogging, and meter box repairs/installations
- Operate backhoe to safely dig and backfill trenches; follow proper sloping, shoring, and trench safety procedures
- Operate trucks, backhoes, mini-excavators, and trailers; ensure proper maintenance and cleaning of equipment and tools
- Conduct preventive maintenance on sewer systems
- Locate water and sewer lines for utility coordination, as directed
- Inspect job sites before, during, and after completion to ensure safe and satisfactory workmanship
- Maintain work time and material records; prepare and submit required reports
- Operate boring machines to install utilities beneath roads and sidewalks
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in utility operations or a related field
- Equivalent combinations of education and municipal work experience may be considered

Must hold or be able to obtain within two (2) years:
- Class “C” Water Distribution License

Class “II” Wastewater License
(As issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality - TCEQ)
- Knowledge of materials, procedures, and equipment used in utility system operations
- Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools (shovels, chainsaws, weed eaters, etc.)
- Skilled in safely operating multi-geared trucks and heavy equipment
- Ability to follow safety regulations and apply proper worksite precautions
- Strong communication skills; ability to interact courteously with the public, coworkers, and contractors
- Ability to read, write, and prepare accurate records and reports

Regular outdoor work with exposure to:
- Extreme weather (heat, cold, rain)
- Loud noise, dust, chemicals, fumes, and physical hazards
- Confined spaces, rodents, insects, and heavy traffic
- Work on varied and unstable terrain, including muddy or flooded trenches and ditches

Heavy physical labor including:
- Lifting, carrying, and loading objects up to 80 lbs.
- Occasional pushing/pulling of loads up to 100 lbs.
- Frequent walking, standing, reaching, and operating equipment
- Specific vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
- On-call availability required including evenings, nights, weekends, and emergencies
