What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laborer - Street Department position at City of Corsicana?
The City of Corsicana is seeking motivated individuals for Laborer I and Laborer II positions. Both roles involve cleaning drainage channels, ditches, and inlets; sweeping gutters; trimming trees; installing signs; repairing concrete alleys; sealing cracks; patching streets; and performing routine maintenance.
- Laborer I is an entry-level position, typically performing routine tasks with little or no related experience. Advancement to Laborer II depends on training, experience, certifications, and satisfactory performance.
- Laborer II is the next level, requiring prior experience in construction and maintenance of streets or related facilities. Employees at this level work with general supervision and are familiar with operating procedures.
Starting Salaries:
- Laborer II: $43,264 / year
- Laborer I: $41,815 / year
- Make minor road and alley repairs
- Clean curbs and gutters
- Repair and install street signs
- Mow grass
- Stripe streets and install street markings
- Maintain drainage ditches, channels, inlets, and gutters
- Clean tools, equipment, and vehicles
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Streets Division Manager
Laborer II:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum 2 years experience in construction, equipment, or maintenance operations
Laborer I:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Knowledge of materials, equipment, and maintenance practices used in street and City property upkeep
- Physical strength and ability to use hand tools such as shovels, hoes, chainsaws, mowers, weed eaters, and rakes
- Experience operating and maintaining light equipment
- Ability to safely drive multi-geared trucks
- Able to operate and climb onto all light equipment
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safe work practices
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively; courteous interaction with public, employees, and contractors
- Work is primarily outdoors with exposure to extreme weather, dust, chemicals, noise, and physical hazards
- Occasional exposure to moving traffic, confined spaces, fumes, rodents, and insects
- Ability to perform strenuous work including lifting up to 100 lbs., bending, climbing, and working in trenches and wet/muddy areas
- Must be available for regular attendance including evenings, nights, weekends, and be on-call for emergencies and hazardous weather situations
- Specific vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus
