Support Services Technician

May be offered as a Support Services Tech (Grade G) or Sr. Support Services Tech (Grade H); depending on experience.

JOB SUMMARY:

Employees in this class are under general supervision of a Bureau or Division Commander. Direct supervision is provided by a subordinate supervisor.

Examples of work performed: Performs accreditation functions; data entry including, incident, accident and supplemental reports and case dispositions; maintains criminal case files and other necessary files; responsible for evidence and property accountability and maintains integrity of evidence room to include items of property/evidence dispositions; records expungements; maintains evidence chain-of-custody records; destroys property/evidence in accordance with court orders/applicable statutes; arranges for the return of property to rightful owners; testifies in court proceedings; performs criminal history records check; performs pre-employment fingerprinting of applicants and of citizens upon request; provides assistance to officers; performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of business English and math

Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment

Knowledge of Rules of Evidence

Knowledge of court proceedings

Knowledge of state/federal firearms regulations

Knowledge of proper drug/narcotic disposal methods

Ability to operate a personal computer

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing

Ability to maintain security and confidentiality regarding sensitive information and property

Ability to keep and organize records

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees under stressful conditions

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or equivalent and a valid TN driver's license are required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

An associate degree in criminal justice, general business, or related field is preferred. Three years' experience with a law enforcement agency with duties closely related to those described herein or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical:

The performance of these functions includes both sedentary and physically active periods of time. Requires the ability to operate a personal computer along with other office equipment. Must be able to negotiate steps/stairs and maneuver to place and retrieve stored items. Regularly lifts items weighing up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

Environmental:

Work is performed primarily indoors. Occasional outdoor tasks might include exposure to inclement weather. Must be able to attend court and possibly testify. Must be able to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit exposure to biohazardous materials.
