Senior Equipment Operator - Quality of Life

The City of Colorado Springs is ready to welcome a Senior Equipment Operator for the Quality of Life team! As a Senior Equipment Operator for this team, you will assist in fulfilling the Keep It Clean COS Program initiative aimed at reducing litter and improving the appearance of Colorado Springs. In support of this program, you will develop and oversee a crew dedicated to this initiative.



This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year, and any furloughs subsequently approved.

Job Type: Full-time; non-exempt
Work Schedule:
 Schedule is generally 6:30AM - 5:00PM. Either Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday depending on crew assignments after hire. This position requires that you are available for emergency callout.
Hiring Range: $28.20 - $33.86

As a Senior Equipment Operator for this team, you will:
  • Operate a wide range of equipment, including mowers, motor graders, vacuum trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, compactors, semi-tractor trailers, and tankers
  • Operate single- and tandem-axle dump trucks equipped with plows and sanders; apply chemicals, abrasives, and other ice-control materials during snow and ice events
  • Provide lead supervision by scheduling, coordinating, and directing the work of assigned staff
  • Perform manual labor such as mowing, trash collection, and cleaning vacated homeless encampments
  • Complete routine maintenance tasks including cleaning culverts, mowing, pothole patching, and debris removal
  • Remove and properly dispose of litter, debris, overgrown vegetation, graffiti, illegal signage, and other blight throughout the City, including vacant lots, creek beds, and banks
  • Secure vacant structures safely using hand tools, power tools, and related equipment
  • Construct, repair, and maintain paved and unpaved rights-of-way and drainage systems using materials such as asphalt, concrete, riprap, and geotextiles
  • Schedule and manage herbaceous fuel maintenance along rights-of-way
  • Read and interpret maps, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals
  • Schedule and coordinate encampment rotations and abatement assignments
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports
  • Perform a variety of skilled construction and maintenance duties
  • Safely and effectively operate heavy equipment along with a full range of hand and power tools

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Operation and maintenance of the division's full range of heavy power-driven equipment
  • Stormwater infrastructure maintenance and repair
  • Snow removal operations
  • Practices, methods, and materials used in general construction and maintenance work
  • Drainage and traffic control operations
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to this type of work
  • Methods and techniques of traffic control and pavement marking

Ability to:
  • Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Operate a transit; set and read grade stakes
  • Apply and explain pertinent, laws, rules, regulations, and City policies and procedures
  • Train and direct the work of others
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Perform supervisory duties in the absence of supervisor
  • Ensure compliance with City standards and specifications
  • Consistently take initiative and proactively seek out opportunities to drive innovation
  • Exemplify strong teamwork by actively engaging in team efforts, taking responsibility, and reliably achieving or surpassing performance goals to motivate and inspire others
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED)
  • Five years of full-time, professional experience in related field
  • Currently possess and able to maintain a valid, non-probationary driver’s license not subject to restrictions
  • Currently possess and able to maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges is required for this position
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain a Colorado Class A CDL within (12) months of hire, not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges is required for this position
