The City of Chesapeake is seeking a caring and dependable Psychiatric Nurse to support individuals receiving outpatient behavioral health services. This Psychiatric Nurse position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced clinicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and community partners in a collaborative and supportive environment.
As a Psychiatric Nurse, you will play an important role in helping individuals on their path toward stability, wellness, and recovery while working a flexible 4 day schedule of 10 hour shifts.

What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a dynamic and energetic Psychiatric Nurse with a strong team mentality and a passion for helping others.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Current RN license in good standing in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Experience in psychiatric, behavioral health, substance use, or community health nursing preferred
- Strong clinical judgment and the ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team
- A compassionate, recovery oriented approach to client care
- Experience with electronic health records preferred. Credible is the current EMR utilized at CIBH
- A positive attitude and professional demeanor with excellent communication skills
What You’ll Do
Under the direction of the Nursing Supervisor and Psychiatric Nurse II, the Psychiatric Nurse will:
- Provide psychiatric nursing services in an outpatient clinic setting
- Administer and monitor psychiatric medications, including injectable medications
- Assess clients for medication effectiveness, side effects, and changes in mental status
- Support psychiatrists and nurse practitioners with medication management services
- Provide education to individuals and families regarding diagnoses, medications, wellness, and recovery
- Coordinate care with clinicians, case managers, pharmacies, medical providers, and community partners
- Complete clinical documentation in accordance with state, federal, Medicaid, and agency requirements
- Organize and supervise psychiatric clinics
- Work proficiently with both on site and telemedicine prescribers
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with cross functional partners from other units

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in nursing.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience conducting psychiatric nursing assessments, medication monitoring, and patient education.
- Familiarity with psychotropic medications, medication side effects, and symptom management.
- 1 year of substance use experience (including administration of Sublocade and Suboxone).
- 1 year of experience working with adults in a behavioral healthcare setting.
