Are you passionate about animals and enjoy helping people? Chesapeake Police Animal Services is looking for a compassionate and enthusiastic Customer Service Clerk I to join our front-line team. In this rewarding role, you’ll support our mission of animal welfare by assisting citizens with adoptions, redemptions, and animal services—ensuring both pets and people receive the highest quality of care and service.
As a key team member, you’ll be the welcoming face of our facility, guiding citizens through the adoption process, reuniting lost pets with their families, and providing essential education on responsible pet ownership. Your work will directly contribute to positive outcomes for animals in our care and help us build a more compassionate community.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide warm, professional, and efficient service to all visitors in person, by phone, and via email.
- Facilitate animal adoptions, intakes, transfers, redemptions, and other related processes in accordance with established policies.
- Review and approve adoption applications, ensuring all candidates meet eligibility criteria.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and applicable city, state, and federal animal ordinances.
- Collect and process fees and donations; issue receipts and provide relevant educational materials.
- Accurately reconcile and report financial transactions on a daily and monthly basis.
- Maintain and update records in the department’s software system, including animal medical records, licenses, and reports.
- Receive and document lost and found reports; track pet identification and notify owners as needed.
- Maintain inventory and submit purchase requests for customer service-related supplies.
- Uphold citizen privacy and ensure concerns are communicated appropriately to supervisors.
- Distribute surveys and collect feedback to help improve services and community engagement.
What We’re Looking For:
- A friendly, energetic, and professional individual with a passion for public service and animal care.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to handle sensitive or emotional situations with empathy.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively.
- Comfortable with computers and data entry; experience with customer-facing software is a plus.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
This is more than just a customer service job—it’s a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. If you’re ready to join a mission-driven team where every day brings new opportunities to help, we’d love to meet you!
