The City of Billings is seeking a Public Works Engineering Utility Locator to provide locating services for City water, stormwater, irrigation, streetlights, signals, and sewer utilities for the Public Works Department.
Salary Range: $22.9775- $30.7897 per hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 7 of a 7-step pay scale. The salary will be dependent on the applicant's education, experience, and training.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Accurately identify and mark underground City utility service lines by referencing utility maps and records for water, stormwater, irrigation, streetlights, signals and sewer systems.
- Collect location coordinates for assets such as storm inlets, irrigation facilities, traffic signals, curb boxes, fire hydrants, and water/sewer valves using GPS equipment and software.
- Update and maintain complete and accurate records.
- Respond to emergency locate requests.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of practices and techniques of operating handheld GPS units, detection equipment, vehicles, and other job-specific tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, and OSHA standards and guidelines.
- Knowledge of and the ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, engineered drawings, and aerial imagery to assist in identifying underground assets.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate office equipment, various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365 and GIS, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
- Ability to communicate in person and in writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
- Ability to locate underground assets on roadways, private property, and other locations using required spray paints, flags, and other equipment.
- Ability to maintain current knowledge of issues and new developments related to assigned work areas.
- Ability to learn and interpret departmental and City of Billings practices and procedures, including the Montana Public Works Standards and City Modifications.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of utility locating, GPS experience or another relevant field.
- Must have a valid Montana driver's license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
- Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology, or utility construction experience, preferred.
