Beaverton City Library is hiring On-call Library Assistants (LA 1s) to join our Circulation team. LA 1s check-in and shelve library materials, search for and process holds, and help patrons locate items and services throughout the library. Previous library work experience is not required.
On-call employees fill in when regularly scheduled staff are absent, so on-calls don’t have the same hours week to week. On-call shifts are usually scheduled a few weeks in advance, but short-notice coverage is also needed at times. The library is open 7 days a week, making weekend availability very desirable. Shifts may be scheduled between 8am and 7pm.
This is a moderately physical, task-oriented position in a bustling work environment. Workloads and priorities change from day to day, so flexibility, good communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment are essential.
This is a non-exempt, non-represented on-call position.

Responsibilities
- Provide excellent service to internal and external customers. Represent the library in a positive manner in accordance with our customer service philosophy.
- Shelve library materials in correct order and use automated systems to check in and sort materials following established procedures.
- Respond to patron requests; answer basic directional questions or provide referrals to appropriate staff.
- Perform a variety of routine tasks in support of collection maintenance.
- Create a workplace that promotes the organizational values of diversity, equity and inclusion, and actively promotes an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.
- Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment with a culture of teamwork and communication.
Minimum qualifications
Education And Experience
- High school diploma or GED; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Effective customer service principles and practices.
- Basic filing and sorting procedures.
- Modern office equipment.
- Following written and verbal instructions.
- Gathering, sorting, organizing, and filing materials in alphabetic, numeric, or alphanumeric order.
- Participating on a team to produce high quality results.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, contractors, other agencies, public officials, the public, and volunteers.
- Providing excellent internal and external customer service.
- Communicating effectively with customers, employees, contractors, other agencies, public officials, the general public and volunteers.
- Utilizing modern office equipment, computer systems and relevant software.
- Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
- Ability to pass reference checks and a pre-hire physical capacity test, and satisfy the requirements of a background check.
