The Appleton Public Library, the Wisconsin Library of the Year for 2025, is seeking a Community Partnerships Supervisor to join our dynamic team. This supervisory management position is responsible for overseeing organizational partnerships, outreach, special projects, and services to adult and teen populations. Work involves supervising the Community Partnerships Section, including adult and young adult services and programming, and local history initiatives. The position includes supervising professional and paraprofessional staff; planning and monitoring section activities; and fostering collaboration across the library and the community. This position works under the general supervision of the Assistant Library Director and is an important member of the library’s leadership team. Some evenings and weekends are required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Coordinates the work of the Community Partnerships Section, including creating new initiatives.
  • Plans, assigns, trains, supervises and evaluates the work of Community Partnerships Section staff.
  • Builds collaborations within the community and with other regional libraries.
  • Oversees work of embedded librarians and models best practices.
  • Serves as a member of the library's management team, including leading standing or ad hoc staff committees.
  • Oversees day-to-day activities for section staff in collection development for all adult collections in conjunction with Materials Management Supervisor.
  • Oversees programming, outreach and development of services for Adult and Young Adult services.
  • Works at service desks throughout the library. Cooperates with other sections to ensure service points are staffed. Creates and manages desk schedule for Community Partnerships staff members.
  • Participates in the APL Communication Team and other library and city teams as assigned.
  • Prepares statistical and informational reports of Community Partnership Services activities for internal and public uses.
  • Participates in library professional organizations.
  • Communicates in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Applies problem solving techniques to appropriate circumstances, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works extra hours as required.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Makes presentations to the library staff, Library Board, the public, and community groups.
  • Conducts tours of the library building.
  • Assist Library Administration in the planning and preparation of the library budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

This position requires at least two years' experience in professional library work, including demonstrated experience in community involvement within or outside the library, project management experience, proficiency in current technologies and a master's degree in library science; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing mutually-beneficial partnerships with community groups.
  • Proficiency in planning and executing projects during all phases of the project life cycle.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library services, including use and integration of technology into services.
  • Ability to be a voice for the public within development and planning of library services.
  • Ability to oversee Community Partnerships Section budget lines.
  • Ability to supervise, train and coordinate the work of subordinate professional, technical and clerical personnel, holding staff accountable to city policies and the library’s mission.
  • Ability to speak publicly before a variety of groups.
  • Ability to research, compile and analyze data and prepare special reports.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with superiors, peers and subordinates.
  • Working knowledge of electronic services and library-related technology and trends.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and able to quickly adapt and learn new software as library requires.
  • Evidence of flexibility, enthusiasm and ability to adapt.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak Spanish or Hmong a plus.
