Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Afterschool Specialist is responsible for leading instruction for students during the afterschool program. The Specialist is responsible for curriculum implementation, and must be a reliable, patient individual with excellent classroom management skills and be available to work from 3:00-6:00pm.

Essential Duties:

  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Lead instruction 3-5 days a week for approximately 90 minutes each day in individual tutoring and/ or small group setting in core subjects such as Math, English Language Arts (ELA), Science and Social Studies.
  • Assist students with understanding and completing daily homework assignments.
  • Support students in developing effective study skills, organization, and time management habits.
  • Implement all curriculum and instruction.
  • Facilitate and inspire projects promoting youth ideas, expressions and creativity.
  • Assist Academic Enrichment Facilitators in the development of themes and project-based learning topics and align with the school's curriculum and themes inquiry.
  • Be a positive role model for children and serve as a positive role model for youth.
  • Interact, engage and maintain open communication with parents to enable a better understanding of youth needs and to help parents with home-school projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • At least one-year experience working with children in a tutoring or teaching capacity.
  • Experience working in a school setting or out of school time program.
  • Strong knowledge of elementary and/or middle school core academic subjects.

Key Competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal).
  • Bilingual- English/Spanish a plus.
  • Experience working with children and/or families.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver services in a manner that is sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of the children and families served (e.g. ethnicity, race, religion).
  • A demonstrated ability to motivate, stimulate and challenge students to commit, participate, and remain engaged throughout the program.

The incumbent is expected to work a schedule, whether in-person or hybrid, as determined by the department's needs to facilitate effective collaboration with the team. The position's requirements are subject to periodic review and adjustment based on organizational needs and changes in work dynamics.
