Classification: Part-Time | Monday – Friday | 10–15 hours weekly

Children of Promise, NYC's (CPNYC) reimagines a just society that values the purpose of every child impacted by mass incarceration and removes barriers to create opportunities for children to thrive and achieve their full potential. CPNYC's mission is to support and advocate for the children of incarcerated parents while speaking out against root causes that affect the communities we serve, including systemic racism, poverty, and bias in our nation's criminal justice system. CPNYC has successfully developed an innovative model, the only one of its kind in New York City, which co-locates a licensed mental health clinic and children's centers in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and the South Bronx. CPNYC provides an array of youth development programming and services tailored to each child's individual strengths and challenges and fosters a unique uplifting environment to foster hope and resilience.

Position Overview: Technology Activity Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in technology activities. Instructors utilize and adapt the New York State Computer Science and Digital Fluency Learning Standards in order to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in CPNYC programs. Technology Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in activities such as coding and programming, robotics, game design, web design, graphic design, digital media and video production, 3D design and printing, and digital citizenship.

Essential Job Functions

  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate technology lessons and project-based activities
  • Teach a variety of technical tools, platforms, and concepts
  • Encourage creativity, problem-solving, and confidence through technology
  • Reinforce safe, responsible, and respectful use of technology, devices, and online platforms
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
  • Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the students’ needs
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain devices, equipment, and classrooms for class activities
  • Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment
  • Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining the rules, and encouraging participation
  • Evaluate activities to determine whether they are producing desired results
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests
  • Support progressive development of student skills leading to a final project
  • Provide support during the academic and homework hour
  • Promote positive character development in all youth
Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skill and Experience

  • Must have experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in technology, computer science, or digital media
  • Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required
  • Must have a passion for CPNYC's mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development
  • Certifications and credentials in the respective skill-based activity highly preferred
  • Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity preferred

Conditions of Employment

All CPNYC staff must successfully complete pre-employment clearance requirements prior to their start date, including a Statewide Central Register database check, a Justice Center Staff Exclusion List check, fingerprint-supported criminal history screening, and verification of employment history. Mandated reporter training is required of all staff. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of these requirements. COMPENSATION:

Commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The hourly pay rate range for this position is $25.00 to $30.00 per hour.
