What are the responsibilities and job description for the Art Activity Specialist position at CHILDREN OF PROMISE NYC?
Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) is a non-profit organization that provides a year-round, unique, integrated academic and enrichment teen program and summer program service model that meets the distinctive needs of children with incarcerated parent(s). CPNYCs mission is to embrace and empower the children of incarcerated parents to break the cycle of intergenerational involvement in the criminal justice system through guidance, support and access to the necessary resources to effectively develop leadership skills, form positive social relationships and enhance academic performance.
Visual Arts Activity Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in art activities. Instructors utilize and adapt the New York State Arts Learning Standards in order to create an engaging and awarding activity that encourages participation in CPNYC programs.
Essential Job Functions
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
- Develop and implement age-appropriate art lessons and creative projects
- Teach a variety of artistic techniques, mediums and concepts
- Encourage creativity, self expression, and confidence through art
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
- Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the student’s needs.
- Prepare, organize and maintain art supplies, materials and classrooms for class activities.
- Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment.
- Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining the rules, and encouraging participation.
- Evaluate activity to determine if they are producing desired results.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project
- Provide support during the academic / homework hour
- Promotes positive character development in all youth
Required Skills
- Must have experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in the Arts.
- Knowledge of various art techniques, materials, and creative processes
- Eperience working with students from diverse backgrounds
- Must be responsible, reliable and punctual.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required
- Must have a passion for CPNYC’s mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development
COMPENSATION:
Commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The hourly payrate range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00 per hour.
