A visionary leader who will serve as the academic and administrative lead of the Department of Computer Science and report to the Dean of the College of Science is sought by the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). This position includes involvement in personnel and curricular development, growing and maintaining well-accredited programs, elevating department status, teaching (as per college standards), and key involvement in the College leadership team. The department is one of UAH’s largest units, offering BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science as well as a BS degree in Cyber Operations Technology (to launch in Fall 2026). The department also contributes to interdisciplinary graduate programs in Cybersecurity and Software Engineering. UAH has been historically highly ranked in federally-funded computing-related research expenditures, and established faculty-led research programs offer an excellent launch pad to shape the future of an impactful departmental research profile.
Candidates must possess a PhD in computer science or a closely related field and a record that merits appointment as a tenured full professor in the unit; an excellent record in research and sustained, recent experiences in which highly effective teaching was provided are necessary. A deep understanding and broad view of providing both undergraduate and graduate education is also required. Additionally, candidates must have strong interpersonal and written communication skills and a demonstrable, ongoing commitment to academic and personal integrity and transparency.
The unit prefers candidates with track records of participation in pertinent professional organizations and previous academic leadership experience, especially in administrative roles. Those with a track record of mentoring faculty, especially junior faculty, who will foster excellence, be an advocate for faculty and students, value faculty teaching and research, respect the key role that service plays in faculty life, and have a track record of delivering on strategic goals are ideal for this position.
