Chatham County’s Engineering Department is seeking a Floodplain Inspector I-II to ensure construction across the Unincorporated area meets vital safety and federal compliance standards. In this role, you will perform daily site inspections and post-damage assessments to protect our community and maintain the integrity of floodplain regulations.- Inspects residential and commercial development occurring in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) plus some X-500 projects across the Unincorporated Chatham County area to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal floodplain regulations and approved construction documents.
- Inspects multiple structure and land disturbing projects throughout the County daily completing full documentation of construction activity and findings.
- Conducts post damage inspections across the UCC that align with the Community Rating System requirements of Substantial Damage (SD) of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
- Notifies appropriate others of Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance (FDPO) violations during construction, discusses corrective options, issues violations, documents findings, and recommends solutions.
- Applies the NFIP higher standards to current INC and IRC standards.
- Coordinates findings with Floodplain Team to ensure structure and documents are compliant with the FDPO.
- Performs erosion control and other inspections assigned as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field, and
- At least three (3) years of experience in floodplain construction projects; or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess or be able to obtain certifications and training in Level IB and II Soil Erosion Control within 12 months of hire.
