Competitive Pay Incentives for Firefighter/EMTs

$6,000 Annual EMT Stipend
Firefighter/EMTs assigned and functioning in an EMT role earn a $6,000 annual stipend, paid in 26 bi-weekly installments starting with initial assignment. Firefighter/EMTs who promote to Paramedic will continue to receive the EMT Stipend until the paramedic credentialing process is completed.

Rescue Seat Pay – Earn More on ALS Units

  • $2.00/hour – Lead provider on ALS Transport Units

  • $1.00/hour – Secondary provider (EMT or Paramedic) on the same ALS Transport Unit

(One Lead and one secondary provider per unit.)

What You’ll Do
  • Respond to fire, rescue, medical, and emergency incidents, operating apparatus and equipment safely and effectively

  • Perform fire suppression, rescue operations, inspections, training, and fire prevention activities, including public education

  • Maintain station, apparatus, and equipment readiness through daily checks, care, and minor maintenance


Minimum Education and Experience: 
  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
  • Possession of an Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology or Emergency Medical Services Technology or equivalent is preferred.
Licenses and/or Certificates: 
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida drivers license (Class E minimum)
  • State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
  • Current American Heart Association BLS provider, Course C;
  • Florida State Firefighter certification
  • DOH approved certification as a Paramedic, State of Florida, within four (4) years of employment with credentialing (successful testing for Paramedic privileges) with the Charlotte County Fire/EMS Medical Director.
  • E.V.O.C. certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Who You Are

You’re a dedicated Firefighter/EMT with the knowledge and hands-on ability to deliver emergency medical care in accordance with Florida EMT standards and curriculum. You have a strong working knowledge of emergency medical practices, procedures, and protocols, and a solid understanding of fire suppression, fire prevention, rescue operations, and first aid.

You’re familiar with Florida Statutes Chapter 401, Florida Administrative Code 64J-1, and NFPA 1001 Firefighter standards, and you apply these guidelines confidently in the field. You demonstrate sound judgment in emergency medical situations, communicate clearly and professionally, and work effectively as part of a team.

You also meet department hiring requirements, including being tobacco-free at time of hire (for hires on or after October 1, 1988).

Working Conditions:  Very frequent exposure to changes in temperature and humidity.
 
Risk/Safety Conditions:  Frequently around moving equipment, exposure to dust, gases and fumes, slippery surfaces, irregular surfaces, and moving objects. Occasional exposure to excessive noise levels. 
 
Physical Activities:  Frequent heavy lifting of over 50 pounds.  Constant standing. Very frequent speaking and hearing, and detailed inspection/reading/editing. Frequent walking, sitting and bending/stooping. Occasional writing, reaching over head, kneeling and crawling. Will frequently monitor/operate fire apparatus such as engine, ladder, brush and staff vehicle.
