About the Department of Buildings (DOB)
The Department of Buildings (DOB) is responsible for regulating construction activity in the District of Columbia. The agency oversees construction permits, reviews building plans for code and zoning compliance, and conducts inspections of construction activity, building systems, and rental housing establishments to ensure public safety and adherence to regulations.
Position Overview
The Help Desk Specialist will play a key role in supporting the Department’s IT operations by installing and configuring software and hardware components of computer and network systems. This entry-level role involves providing timely technical support to end users, troubleshooting system and network issues, and performing diagnostic tests to maintain optimal system performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to and diagnose hardware and software issues through discussion with users.
- Ensure timely recognition, isolation, and resolution of technical problems.
- Maintain and update IT equipment inventory records.
- Provide first and second-tier support for end-user issues across PC, server, and mainframe environments.
- Identify, research, and resolve technical incidents efficiently.
- Respond promptly to support requests via phone, email, or in person.
- Document, track, and monitor all reported issues to ensure timely resolution.
- Collaborate with network, software, and applications teams to restore services and identify root causes of issues.
- Simulate or recreate user problems to assist in resolving operating difficulties.
- Recommend system or configuration modifications to prevent recurring issues.
- Provide technical support for Office 365 and related software applications.
- Manage and maintain user accounts within Active Directory.
Qualifications
Minimum Education/Certification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Preferred Skills & Knowledge:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365 and Windows operating environments.
- Understanding of networking principles and troubleshooting techniques.
- Strong customer service orientation and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience maintaining user accounts in Active Directory.
