POSITION: SUPERVISOR OF K-12 SOCIAL STUDIES & SPECIAL PROGRAMS
SALARY: UNIT II SALARY SCALE
OVERVIEW OF POSITION: The Supervisor of K–12 Social Studies and Special Programs provides administrative and instructional leadership through the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive social studies programs. This position also oversees special programs, including, but not limited to, Gifted and Talented, elementary and middle school summer programs, and after-school programs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree with appropriate certification
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience
- Eligibility for or possession of a Maryland State Department of Education certification as a supervisor
- Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into instruction
- Working knowledge of Maryland Content Standards and current state assessments
- Experience in the design and/or implementation of innovative social studies curriculum and instructional practices
- Knowledge of current trends in social studies education, including effective instructional strategies
- Demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and facilitate high-quality professional development
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Exemplary interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with staff, students, and the community
- Ability to perform duties with an understanding of district, state, and federal requirements, as well as Board of Education policies
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful experience as a school-based administrator
- Experience developing social studies curriculum frameworks and guides
- Extensive knowledge of curriculum development and research-based strategies that improve student achievement
- Knowledge of the school improvement planning process
- Demonstrated record of success in leadership and program implementation
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide leadership for a comprehensive, coherent, and high-quality K–12 social studies program aligned to state standards and district priorities
- Support principals and teachers in strengthening Tier 1 instruction, including the use of effective instructional strategies, high-quality materials, and student engagement practices
- Promote the consistent use of learning intentions, success criteria, and formative assessment practices
- Serve as a consultant to teachers, principals, and district leaders regarding instructional expectations, curriculum, and best practices
- Participate with principals in the observation and evaluation of teachers, as appropriate
- Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of social studies curriculum, including scope and sequence, unit plans, and instructional resources
- Ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with Maryland standards and state assessments
- Collaborate with staff to design, implement, and analyze common assessments to improve student outcomes
- Analyze student performance data to inform instructional decisions and program improvements
- Recommend policy and programmatic changes based on data research, and identified needs
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate high-quality professional learning aligned to district initiatives and instructional priorities
- Support teachers, instructional leaders, and administrators through coaching, feedback, and job-embedded professional learning
- Disseminate information related to curriculum trends, instructional practices, professional growth opportunities, and student programs
- Provide oversight for special programs, including Gifted and Talented, elementary and middle school summer programs, and after-school programs
- Coordinate and support student opportunities such as enrichment programs and partnerships with external organizations
- Ensure programs are aligned to district goals and meet the needs of diverse learners
- Collaborate with principals, central office staff, and community partners to support instructional and programmatic goals
- Serve as a liaison with local, state, and national organizations related to social studies education and special programs
- Coordinate social studies-related activities and partnerships sponsored by external agencies
- Communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders regarding expectations, initiatives, and outcomes
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, and placement of social studies teachers
- Support school leaders in building instructional capacity within their teams
- Contribute to a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement
- Ensure all programs and practices comply with district policies, state regulations, and federal requirements
- Assist in budget development and resource allocation to support instructional and program needs
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
