New Britain High School - Direct Support Professional

Scheduled hours: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 2:30pm, 30 hours per week. 

About the Role:

The NBHS Direct Support Professional plays a vital role in providing compassionate and individualized care to individuals with developmental disabilities or other support needs. This position focuses on enhancing the quality of life for those served by promoting independence, dignity, and community integration. The professional will work closely with clients to assist with daily living activities, skill development, and social engagement, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. Collaboration with families, healthcare providers, and multidisciplinary teams is essential to create and implement personalized support plans. Ultimately, this role contributes to empowering individuals to achieve their personal goals and live fulfilling lives within their communities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass background checks and drug screenings as required by state regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of developmental disabilities and experience in a caregiving or support role.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) or equivalent.
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or behavioral health needs.
  • Training in CPR, first aid, and medication administration.
  • Familiarity with person-centered planning and community integration strategies.
  • Additional language skills to support diverse client populations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication administration, and mobility support.
  • Implement individualized support plans by facilitating skill-building activities and encouraging community participation.
  • Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and any changes in health or well-being, reporting concerns promptly to supervisors or healthcare professionals.
  • Provide emotional support and foster positive relationships to promote social interaction and personal growth.
  • Ensure a safe and clean environment by adhering to health and safety protocols and responding appropriately to emergencies.

Skills:

The required skills such as effective communication and empathy are essential for building trust and understanding with clients, enabling the professional to provide personalized support. Attention to detail and documentation skills ensure accurate tracking of client progress and compliance with care plans. Preferred skills like CPR and First Aid training prepare the professional to respond confidently to emergencies, enhancing client safety. Knowledge of person-centered planning allows the professional to tailor activities that promote independence and community involvement. Additionally, cultural competency and language skills help in addressing the diverse needs of clients, fostering inclusive and respectful care environments.
