CBTS has partnered with a client in the Grand Rapids, MI area to identify a Data Center Engineer on an 8-12 month contract opening. This role will be ONSITE in the Grand Rapids, MI area
- Role will be in a W2 format only. NO C2C/3RD PARTIES ALLOWED AT THIS TIME
- Role will require early morning work on Wednesdays, but normal 1st shift business hours otherwise
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Data Center Engineer to support daily operations in our Grand Rapids data center. This role is responsible for cabling, server access support, decommissions, and acting as the onsite liaison for the remote network and server engineering teams. The engineer will work closely with client and internal teams to ensure smooth operations, timely access, and reliable infrastructure support.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily data center operations, including hardware checks, server access, and equipment handling.
- Provide “hands and feet” support for the remote network/server teams (logging into servers, basic troubleshooting, installing/removing hardware).
- Execute cabling projects (fiber and copper) to support ongoing expansions and changes.
- Assist with scheduled decommissioning and removal activities (including early-morning work on Wednesdays as needed).
- Identify faulty Cisco hardware (switches, routers, firewalls, etc.).
- Open an RMA case with Cisco’s Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or through the Cisco support portal.
- Coordinate hardware replacement, including shipping logistics and ensuring the correct replacement model/part is provided.
- Install the replacement equipment and sending the defective unit back to Cisco within their required time frame.
- Document the RMA process and updating ticketing/tracking systems (like ServiceNow, Remedy, etc.).
- Coordinate with client for site access, vendor escorting, and facility-related activities.
- Maintain accurate documentation of installs, removals, and infrastructure changes.
- Prepare equipment and environment for incoming projects, ensuring readiness for technical teams.
- Follow data center best practices for security, safety, and operational standards.
Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in data center operations or infrastructure support.
- Strong hands-on experience with cabling (copper and fiber), including installation and cleanup.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as racking/stacking servers and lifting equipment (up to ~50 lbs).
- Familiarity with basic server and network concepts (enough to provide effective “remote hands” support).
- Identify and replace faulty devices (firewalls, routers, switches, etc.).
- Strong communication skills for working with remote technical teams and onsite vendors.
- Must be able to work onsite in Grand Rapids daily; no remote option.
- Willingness to work occasional early-morning shifts (especially Wednesdays) for decommissions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience working in enterprise data centers with structured cabling and change control.
- Exposure to vendor management and facility access processes.
- Basic knowledge of ticketing systems (e.g., ServiceNow).
