I. GENERAL SUMMARY:
This person attends to the the shelter in the evening and nighttime. This position ensures that our participants and volunteers are welcomed in a safe and secure environment. This position is responsible for the daily routines, consistent application of the rules, and maintaining supplies of the shelter. Depending on the work location and work time, this position allows staff to sleep on duty during part of the night. Shifts vary for the men and women’s shelters (see shifts below).

The personnel of the Shelter/Residential Programs of St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge collaborate with St. Vincent de Paul staff by embracing all works of charity and justice. The staff collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them St. Vincent de Paul sees the face of Christ. All personnel of the Shelter/Residential Programs participate actively in the homeless Continuum of Care to coordinate services, maximize guest benefits, and minimize duplication of effort.

II. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education, Experience & Training:
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Experience or skills in working with homeless persons
B. Other Qualifications:
  • Ability to engage participants in positive changes in their lives.
  • Ability to use a computer, copier, fax and other office equipment.
  • Preferred ability to enter data into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)
C. Physical Demands:
  • Be able to walk around shelter in both inside and outside areas up to one city block. Be able to see what is going on in shelter and on outdoor security monitor.
  • Ability to stay awake and alert during entire awake part of shift.
  • Ability to lift 15 pounds
  • Ability to wake up and be alert to alarms, knocks on the office door, or to telephone calls during the sleep part of the shift.
D. Working Environment:
  • Position is in an office and community environment.
III. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
List Essential Job Duties below in broad, brief statement and assign a percentage of the time that the employee will spend performing each task in the “Weight” area. Then, list the detailed duties next to Standards. The total of all job duties must equal 100% and each duty cannot be less than 10% or more than 35%. Note: There can be less than eight Essential Job Duties.

1. Treat each person kindly and safely while managing shelter (25% of the time).
  • Talk in welcoming, polite and kind manner with participants, St. Vincent de Paul staff and donors. Each person is to be treated as a “child of God”.
  • Set nurturing and supportive boundaries for participants including making decision about when participants are invited and required to leave.
  • Deescalate participants through conversation when participants behavior or conversation starts to become loud or problematic.
  • Check and search bags and belongings brought into shelter.
  • Make decisions about when a potential guest asks to enter shelter after hours; and when a current guest has to leave because of behavior or lack of program compliance.
2. Manage shelter routines and documentation (25% of the time).
  • Make sure that the census and sign-in sheets match each shift.
  • Monitor and track guest work attendance, earnings and savings.
  • Be aware of shelter telephone ringing and answer promptly and courteously.
3. Manage food, supplies and cleanliness (20 % of the time).
  • Ensure cleanliness of shelter through supervising participants completing chores, etc. Require extra cleaning as needed.
  • Manage the use of supplies in shelter and ordering of supplies through supervisor.
  • Manage the provision of food, shelter and safety of participants.
4. Manage the safety and security of the shelter buildings (20% of the time).
  • Make sure that the interior and exterior of shelter is safe, secure and locked at the beginning, during and end of shift, using the participants as assistants where helpful and appropriate.
  • Make sure the interior and exterior and grounds of shelter area are clean and policed for cleanliness, passing a thorough inspection, using the participants as assistants where helpful and appropriate.
  • Respond to security and fire alarms in safe and secure fashion, making sure that the safety of participants and staff are paramount.
5. Collaborating with other St. Vincent de Paul staff for the smooth operation of the overall program (10% of the time).
