Special Education SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SPECIALIST Definition: Develops, impediments, monitors, and assesses an individualized education plan for students that intend to reduce or eliminate speech and language impediments that interfere with the individual student’s ability to derive full full benefit from the District’s education program. Example of Duties: Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for speech and language improvement. Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech and language handicapped children. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments. Serves as a member of the school's Student Study Team. Attends and presents assessment information relative to speech and language at Individualized Education Planning (IEP) meetings. Provides screening to identify speech and language handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels. Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community, as appropriate. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the students' daily activities. Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families, when appropriate. Keeps thorough ongoing records for individual students receiving school provided speech and language services. Compiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate. Maintains lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services. 1. Valid Speech-Language Pathology Teaching Credential issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing 2. Letter of Introduction 3. Resume 4. Three Current Letters of Recommendation (within the last year) 5. CCC's Certificate if applicable 6. Copies of Transcripts
