Role Overview
The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse is responsible for overseeing wound, ostomy, and skin care programs, providing expert consultation for complex wounds, fistulas, and incontinence-related skin issues.
They develop, evaluate, and educate staff, patients, and families on wound and ostomy care, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based practices aligned with nursing standards and ethical principles.
The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to plan, implement, and assess patient care, supporting patient self-management and serving as a clinical preceptor.
They monitor regulatory compliance, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and lead workgroups to analyze wound and ostomy trends.
Key qualifications include a graduate of an accredited WOCN program with current certification, active RN license, BLS, and minimum one year RN experience. Skills required encompass critical thinking, effective communication, time management, and adaptability.
Preferred experience includes spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, or wound care expertise.
