Carex is partnering with a fast moving healthtech startup partner to hire a Sr. Manager, Data Engineering. The Sr. Manager, Data Engineering will serve as a hands-on technical leader and strategic visionary, responsible for building and scaling a modern, secure, and high-performance data engineering platform. This is a unique opportunity to define architecture, establish roadmap priorities, and bring process maturity to a rapidly growing team in a fast-paced healthtech environment. The role will directly influence the direction of both customer-facing data products and internal analytics infrastructure, balancing execution with cross-functional leadership in a highly regulated domain.

The Sr. Manager, Data Engineering will serve as a hands-on technical leader and strategic visionary, responsible for building and scaling a modern, secure, and high-performance data engineering platform. This is a unique opportunity to define architecture, establish roadmap priorities, and bring process maturity to a rapidly growing team in a fast-paced healthtech environment. The role will directly influence the direction of both customer-facing data products and internal analytics infrastructure, balancing execution with cross-functional leadership in a highly regulated domain.
What You’ll Do
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of data engineers, including offshore and contract resources.
- Set the vision and define a clear roadmap for the data engineering platform aligned with business goals.
- Architect scalable and secure data pipelines that support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data workloads.
- Split the team into two capability-focused groups: one for immediate customer data needs, and one for long-term product and platform development.
- Build the supporting architecture and workflows to enable the above team structure.
- Drive adoption of best-in-class practices including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and test automation.
- Ensure HIPAA and HITRUST compliance while managing data governance and quality standards.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and business teams to deliver integrated, data-driven solutions.
- Manage vendor relationships and third-party data integration strategies.
- Balance hands-on coding with strategic leadership in a “player-coach” role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 7 years of experience in data engineering, including 2 years in a leadership role.
- Proven expertise designing and managing large-scale data architectures and pipelines.
- Deep proficiency with Spark, Flink, dbt, Airflow or Prefect.
- Strong hands-on experience with Python, Scala, SQL, and both relational and NoSQL data systems.
- Familiarity with cloud data platforms (AWS or GCP), Databricks, and lakehouse/data warehouse solutions such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift.
- Knowledge of visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js.
- Experience with CI/CD systems, version control (Git), and production-grade software delivery.
- Exceptional ability to lead technical teams and drive architectural decisions in ambiguous or evolving environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and present across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience with real-time streaming architectures and low-latency pipelines.
- Familiarity with deploying ML models in cloud environments using Databricks.
- Exposure to advanced analytics or AI techniques such as NLP, reinforcement learning, or deep learning.
- Prior experience working with healthcare data, including regulatory and compliance frameworks.
