Position Summary
The WIC Nutritionist is responsible for conducting nutrition and breastfeeding assessments, providing education and counseling, and identifying the need for individualized care and referrals. This role plays a key part in supporting the health and well-being of women, infants, and children in the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the Indiana WIC Program positively through clinic services and community outreach (e.g., farmers markets, healthcare partnerships)
- Conduct nutrition assessments and provide individualized, culturally appropriate education and counseling
- Support and promote breastfeeding as the standard infant feeding method
- Provide evidence-based breastfeeding education to pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding clients
- Maintain accurate documentation in the Indiana WIC Management Information System (INWIC MIS)
- Develop and tailor food prescriptions based on client needs
- Provide referrals to Medicaid, substance abuse services, and other community resources
- Lead group education sessions and maintain related documentation
- Schedule client appointments and manage records within INWIC MIS
- Ensure confidentiality in compliance with federal WIC regulations
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and community partners
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and required conferences
- May supervise other staff as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Required – Must meet one of the following:
- Registered Dietitian (RD) or RD-eligible
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or Nutrition Sciences
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a health-related field with documented nutrition coursework
- Experience in maternal and child health or public health
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Cultural competency and ability to serve diverse populations
- Flexibility in a changing program environment
- Professionalism aligned with legal and ethical standards
- Ability to use standard office equipment and electronic systems
- Ability to accommodate language needs using interpretation services
- Fast-paced clinical setting with frequent public interaction
- Exposure to noise and close-contact environments
- Measuring height/weight
- Performing hemoglobin finger sticks
- Lifting/holding infants and children
- Occasional travel between clinic locations and to statewide conferences
