CARBON COUNTY INVASIVE PLANTS DEPARTMENT IS HIRING FOR A FULL-TIME COORDINATOR
POSITION: COORDINATOR
WAGE: $27.67/hr – $31.62/hr DOE
JOB DESCRIPTION: Protect Carbon County from the harmful effects of invasive noxious weeds by developing, implementing, and maintaining a management program for invasive plants and noxious weeds. This program should include administration, public education, and weed prevention and control measures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Responsible for updating and implementing the Carbon County Weed Management Plan, in coordination with the Carbon County Invasive Plants/Noxious Weed District Board, and ensuring the Plan’s consistency with the Montana State Weed Plan and the Montana Weed Control Act.
• Implement and enforce district compliance with regard to the MT Noxious Weed Control Act.
• Develop Department Policies and Procedures related to: pesticide application and safety protocols, equipment use and maintenance, herbicide purchase and equipment rental programs, and procedures to enforce and remedy violation issues. Ensure proper staff training on and compliance with policies and procedures.
• Provides supervision of Invasive Plants Department Staff, including but not limited to: establishing work schedules, providing duty assignments, monitoring safety procedures and working practices; training employees on weed identification and environmental impact of pesticides, pesticide safety and application techniques, use of Personal Protective Equipment, and the safe operation and maintenance of Department equipment. Coordinates recruitment processes with Human Resources and the Board of County Commissioners in accordance with County Policy.
• Prepare and monitor the annual County Budget. Purchase herbicides, equipment, and supplies in accordance with Carbon County’s Procurement Policy.
• Implement weed and monitoring programs to determine the effectiveness of the county weed management plan.
BENEFITS & SCHEDULE: Full-time employees are eligible for health, dental & vision insurance; county-paid life insurance; and vacation, sick & comp leave after the successful completion of the probationary period. Employer pays up to $1025 a month per employee toward health insurance premiums for FT employees. Schedule to be determined.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Required:
• The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Working knowledge of plant identification, biology, and ecology with emphasis on noxious weeds.
• Knowledge of weed management methods, including herbicides, biological, and cultural methods.
• Must be able to read maps and interpret aerial photographs.
• Possess an understanding of the Montana Weed Law and Pesticide Regulations.
• Working knowledge of current weed and invasive plant control practices and equipment, and be able to perform minor maintenance on equipment.
• Must have, or obtain within three (3) months of hire, a Government Pesticide Applicator's License, Pesticide Dealers License, and be a Certified Weed Seed Free Forage Agent.
• Must have a valid Montana Driver's License
• Must be bondable under the provisions of the Carbon County insurance policy
Education and experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience with weed abatement, chemicals, and pesticides/herbicides.
o Equivalencies include coursework in agriculture or a related field, certification as a licensed pesticide applicator, and two (2) years of experience in weed abatement operations.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
• Prepare yearly budget for operations, including personnel, equipment, and supplies.
• Purchase of chemicals and supplies.
• Reporting to the State, County, and other agencies on grant funds and county budgeted funds.
• Apply for, manage, and report on various grant and cost-sharing programs.
• Must be bondable
EXTENT OF PUBLIC CONTACT:
• Extensive public contact. Coordinate and oversee weed management activities between private, county, state, and federal land managers.
• Help landowners with weed-infested property to develop and implement weed management to fit their needs and county requirements
