The employee works under the direction of department management and experienced meat cutters, performs only those tasks for which the employee has been trained and authorized, and follows the applicable collective bargaining agreement, company policy, food-safety requirements, and equipment-safety procedures.

IMPORTANT - This is a part-time position. You must be at least 18 years old.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide premier customer service, including greeting customers, answering questions, taking special orders, and helping customers select meat products.
  • Learn all details of the meat department and develop the manual skills necessary to perform, after the stated training period, the duties of a Journeyman Meat Cutter.
  • Work under the direction of department management and qualified meat cutters and perform assigned apprentice duties in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
  • Assist with receiving, inspecting, dating, storing, and rotating fresh and frozen meat products.
  • Stock, rotate, face, and maintain meat cases, coolers, freezers, displays, and promotional areas.
  • Wrap, weigh, price, label, package, and display meat products accurately and attractively.
  • Assist with trimming, cutting, grinding, portioning, tenderizing, and preparing meat products only as trained, qualified, and assigned.
  • Prepare value-added and case-ready items according to approved recipes, specifications, and production plans.
  • Use knives, grinders, slicers, tenderizers, scales, wrappers, and other meat-department equipment only after required training and authorization.
  • Do not operate a band saw unless management has confirmed that the employee's classification, training, qualification, and assignment permit its use under the applicable collective bargaining agreement and company safety requirements.
  • Follow approved procedures for safe handling, separation, storage, thawing, preparation, and display of meat products.
  • Clean and sanitize knives, tools, equipment, cutting surfaces, cases, coolers, floors, drains, and work areas according to required schedules and procedures.
  • Check product quality and freshness, review sell-by and use-by dates, rotate stock, and take appropriate action to prevent shrink and protect customers.
  • Maintain required product, sanitation, grinding, cooling, and temperature records and immediately report out-of-range conditions.
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of meat cuts, products, cooking methods, present and future ads, seasonal items, and department specials.
  • Maintain accurate pricing, labeling, inventory, and product identification and report ordering, receiving, or shipping discrepancies to the department manager.
  • Assist with unloading deliveries, organizing the cooler and freezer, and maintaining orderly back-room storage.
  • Understand the store's layout and personally assist customers in locating products throughout the store when requested.
  • Adhere to all food-safety regulations, sanitation requirements, company policies, and department procedures.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all knife, machine, lifting, and lockout/tagout safety procedures applicable to assigned work.
  • Reinforce safety programs by identifying unsafe conditions, correcting them when authorized, and promptly notifying store management.
  • Inspect assigned equipment before use and notify the department or store manager of any item in need of repair.
  • Notify management of customer or employee accidents, injuries, spills, or other safety incidents.
  • Promote trust, respect, cooperation, and teamwork among associates.
  • Work cooperatively in a high-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Manage conflict in a reasonable, nonconfrontational, and cooperative manner.
  • Act with honesty and integrity regarding customer, employee, and business information.
  • Follow directions and seek assistance when necessary to resolve customer, food-safety, equipment, or business issues.
  • Provide support and assistance through direct interaction with minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the employee's classification, training, and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • No prior meat-cutting experience is required; this is an apprentice training position.
  • Previous grocery, food-service, meat-department, or customer-service experience is helpful but not required.
  • Must successfully complete all company and union-required training applicable to assigned duties.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Write simple correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other associates of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Basic addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, weights, measures, pricing, and percentages.
  • Ability to read and use scales, product codes, labels, recipes, and production quantities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Food Handler Certification as required by State law; training or certification may be provided at store level.
  • Equipment-specific and safety training required before operating meat-department tools or machinery.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT

Associates may be required to use standard meat-department equipment after required training and authorization, including but not limited to:

  • Slip-resistant shoes with closed toe and heel
  • Apron, cut-resistant gloves, and other required personal protective equipment
  • Uniform per store policy
  • Knives and hand tools
  • Scales, labelers, and wrapping equipment
  • Meat grinders, slicers, tenderizers, and related equipment
  • Carts, racks, and approved material-handling equipment

PAY RANGE (depends on industry experience and the applicable union wage schedule)

Wages starting at $15.25/hour, subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement and wage schedule.

Work Schedule (depends on availability and store needs)

Permanent Part-Time positions available. Some/Most may require availability on nights, weekends, and holidays. Overtime may be available based on the store's needs and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
