Unit Coordinators serve as the first-line leaders for Camp Counselors and are responsible for overseeing daily operations within an assigned Camp Cannon unit. Units include Sports & Games, Culinary & CITs, STEM & Academics, and The Arts.
Unit Coordinators support Camp Providers, help supervise counselors, and ensure the successful execution of camp programming while maintaining camper safety, staff coordination, and operational efficiency. This role requires strong organization, leadership, and communication skills.
Unit Coordinators receive guidance from the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director and will help mentor and coach Camp Counselors within their assigned unit.
Unit Coordinators must be available to work a minimum of 5-6 weeks of Camp Cannon and attend mandatory training (June 1–4) prior to the beginning of Camp.
Requirements and Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily implementation and execution of camp programs within the assigned unit, checking in and conducting observations regularly to ensure top-notch programming quality and camper safety.
- Assist Camp Leadership and Camp Providers with instructional support, logistics, and activity supervision.
- Help supervise and mentor Camp Counselors by modeling effective supervision, conflict resolution, classroom management; and supporting staff development.
- Help manage, enforce and model the standard for counselor and staff attendance, dress code and engagement, addressing staffing needs and substituting for absent counselors when necessary.
- Provide ongoing informal feedback to counselors and assist the Assistant Camp Director/Camp Director with formal counselor evaluations.
- Supervise campers and camp staff during snack time, lunch, bathroom breaks, and extended day programming, including overseeing snack distribution and checking campers in for Lunch Care/Lunch Service.
- Facilitate morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up procedures and provide supervision in the gym or designated arrival and departure areas, ensuring campers are only released to authorized adults/guardians.
- Help create a welcoming and energetic environment for campers, including running morning skits.
- Maintain and double check to ensure accurate daily attendance records and proper camper sign-in and sign-out.
- Ensure campers are in the correct locations for carline, lunch, and extended day programs.
- Help oversee camper behavior management and redirection when necessary.
- Remain on duty until all assigned campers are safely dismissed or until released by Camp Leadership.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians/camp staff/camp providers/campers.
- Maintain accurate documentation and camp records in accordance with Camp Cannon policies.
- Ensure camp facilities and shared spaces are left organized and clean at the end of each session.
- Identify, respond to, and report environmental or safety hazards to the Leadership Team immediately.
- Oversee and supervise Counselors in Training (CITs) in partnership with Camp Leadership.
- Monitor overall camp program quality and safety standards and address and report concerns and solutions to Camp Leadership.
- Serve as a professional ambassador and role model for Camp Cannon and Cannon School.
- Ability to work an 8 or 9 hour (with a break) shift
Qualifications
- College degree preferred or equivalent experience in youth programs, education, or camps required.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience working with children strongly preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated reliability, professionalism and sound judgement
- Ability to remain calm and responsive in a dynamic situation
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and supervise outdoors and indoors for extended periods.
- Ability to assist with setup, transitions, and equipment movement as needed.
- Availability for the full camp day, including extended day coverage as assigned.
- Ability to get to and from work each day reliably.
