What are the responsibilities and job description for the Upper School Counselor - Long Term Substitute position at CANNON SCHOOL INC?
We are hiring an Upper School Counselor to serve as a long-term substitute during a maternity leave, beginning August 1, 2026 and continuing through early November 2026.
The Cannon Upper School (US) Counselor, a Masters level clinician, works to address the academic, personal, and social needs of all US students (grades 9-12) through individual counseling sessions, advising activities, and large group lessons. During the school day, the US Counselor is accessible to students who may be struggling with a variety of concerns, such as friendship difficulties, social adjustment concerns, coping with the loss of a loved one, etc. The US Counselor also facilitates Student Life programming related to teaching students healthy, positive coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and general school/academic and life worries. The US Counselor reports directly to the Head of Upper School.
Working with Students:

Provides individual counseling to US students through scheduling of consistent and reliable cycles of appointments

Provides individual and/or small group counseling to US students during crisis situations

Collaborates with US Learning Specialist to provide individual and/or small group support of students with dual diagnoses of LD/ADHD and emotional health

Assists students in gaining a sound knowledge of themselves and in developing a positive self-image by:
-
Working with students to enhance their self-awareness, decision-making, and goal-setting skills through personality measures, social intelligence, and social skill development

Contributing to the continual promotion of an educational climate in which students can grow intellectually and emotionally
-
Helping students assess strengths and areas in need of growth
-

Facilitates communication between students and parents, advisors, teachers, deans, peers, etc.

Meets with students serving In-School Reflections when necessary

Serves as advisor to IM FINE Mental Health Awareness Club

Serves as co-advisor to Peer Support Team (pst;)
Working with Parents/Families:
-
Assists parents in understanding and meeting the educational, family, and personal/social needs of their child
-
Provides parent education on pertinent topics, such as stress, overall wellness, alcohol and other drugs, etc.

Serves as a consultant to parents and provides outside referral information when necessary
-
Serves as a liaison among families, outside support, and US personnel when necessary

Presents psychoeducational programming for parents in small or large groups
Working with Colleagues:
-
Serves as an active member of the Student Support Team, collaborating with team members to provide intervention strategies for students in academic and/or emotional need

Collaborates with US Deans of Students and US Academic Dean in developing Student Life programming related to teaching students healthy, positive coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and general school/academic and life worries

Collaborates with existing US Counselor, US Learning Specialist, US Academic Dean, Deans of Students, College Counseling Department, and Advisors/Teachers in finding developmentally appropriate curricula to support students in their academic efforts in specific circumstances

Serves on US Administration Team

Serves as member of MS/US Transition Team: develop a transition plan for 8th grade students moving into the 9th grade

Collaborates with the LS/MS Counselors for school counseling initiatives, consultation, and parent education

Presents psychoeducational programming for faculty/staff to individuals, small and large groups

Communicates as needed with School Nurses
Education/ Experience Required:
-
Masters in Counseling, (School Counseling, LPC, LPC-A or LPC-Supervisor preferred)
or
-
Masters in Social Work (School Social Worker, LCSW, LCSW-A or LCSW Supervisor preferred)
-
Masters in School Psychology (Clinical experience required)
-
Applicable current licensure required

Adolescent counseling experience required
