Overview

Camp 4 Paws is seeking a dedicated and experienced Kennel Manager to oversee our dog boarding and daycare operations. The ideal candidate will possess a passion and love for quality animal care, strong leadership and management skills, a background in pet care and handling of dogs, and a knowledge of dog breeds and their temperaments/behaviors. This role involves managing daily kennel activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of all animals, and providing exceptional customer service to pet owners. The Kennel Manager will play a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for both pets and clients. Looking for someone who is confident, comfortable, and calm around dogs of all breeds.

Duties

  • Supervise, manage, and assist in daily kennel operations, including all boarding and daycare activities, feeding, cleaning, grooming, bathing, administering medications, and monitoring animals' health and behavior.
  • Reporting any animal concerns immediately to veterinary professionals and the owner.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization within the kennel facility.
  • Conduct thorough dog evaluations for best dog boarding and daycare placement/environment.
  • Oversee dog handling and ensure proper animal restraint techniques are followed at all times.
  • Implement and train staff on all boarding and daycare tasks, animal handling, safety procedures, and customer service standards.
  • Manage scheduling of staff shifts to ensure adequate coverage at all times.
  • Maintain detailed records of animal care, treatments, and client communications.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations within the kennel environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service by communicating effectively with pet owners regarding their pets' needs and well-being. Handle customer inquiries with professionalism and provide updates on pet status.
  • Oversee heavy lifting tasks related to cleaning supplies, bedding, bathing, or equipment as required.
  • Use of computer and software for most tasks including reservations and client relations.
  • Manage inventory of supplies related to pet care and kennel operations.
  • Work with local community groups, veterinarians, and rescue groups. Develop and make presentations to educate community on different dog topics, while always promoting the business.
  • Must be available to work on weekends and holidays.

Experience

  • Must have a love for dogs and care about their well-being.
  • Several years of relevant management and leadership experience is required.
  • Should have at least five (5) years of experience working in kennels, animal care facilities, or boarding and daycare environments.
  • Knowledge of dog breeds and temperaments, training techniques, and basic veterinary procedures is needed.
  • Experience administering medications.
  • Skills in pet grooming, bathing, pet sitting, and animal handling are necessary.
  • Strong background in animal restraint techniques and pet care best practices.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with pet owners.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and work in physically demanding environments.
  • Have strong computer skills.
  • Be able to interact on social media on a daily basis.
  • Pet or Dog First Aid and CPR Certified a plus.

Education

  • Minimum of a high school education with at least some college or technical training preferred.

1. Management and Operations Skills

  • Leadership & Supervision: Hiring, training, mentoring, and supervising kennel staff and volunteers, including setting performance standards and conducting evaluations.
  • Scheduling & Time Management: Creating staff work schedules and managing time efficiently to ensure tasks are completed on time.
  • Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking: Identifying and resolving issues, from animal behavior problems to staff conflicts and facility maintenance concerns.
  • Inventory Management: Overseeing and purchasing supplies, equipment, and food while staying within a budget.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records for animal health, behavior, feeding schedules, administering medications, and client information - often using computer software programs.
  • Compliance & Safety: Knowledge of and ability to enforce safety protocols and local, state, and federal animal welfare regulations.
  • Computers: Ability to use computers and software management system. Interact effectively using various social media platforms on a daily basis. Knowledge and use of QuickBooks a big plus.

2. Animal Care & Handling Skills

  • Animal Behavior Knowledge: Understanding canine body language and social behavior to manage group play, identify stress, and prevent incidents.
  • Handling and Restraint: Ability to safely and humanely handle and restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments, especially those who may be aggressive or frightened.
  • Basic Animal Health & First Aid: Monitoring animal health, recognizing signs of illness, disease, or injury, and the ability to administer medications and vaccinations as needed. Pet CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.
  • Nutrition and Feeding: Knowledge of normal food and liquid requirements, including the ability to manage special diets and specific care instructions.
  • Grooming: Basic grooming skills such as bathing, brushing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning.

3. Interpersonal & Soft Skills

  • Customer Service & Communication: Interacting with pet owners in a professional, friendly, and empathetic manner, addressing concerns, and providing quality service.
  • Compassion & Empathy: A genuine passion for animal welfare and the ability to be kind and caring towards animals in the facility.
  • Teamwork: The ability to work collaboratively with all employees, from kennel assistants to veterinarians and office staff.
  • Physical Stamina: The role requires physical fitness to be on one's feet for long periods, perform heavy-duty cleaning, bend, stoop, and lift animals weighing up to 50 pounds (or assist with larger animals).
  • Attention to Detail: Being thorough in completing work tasks, from administering medication to following specific cleaning protocols.
  • Public Speaking: Comfortable interacting with groups of people.
