Under the general direction of the Supervising Tax Auditor (STA II), in the Local Revenue Branch, the Associate Tax Auditor (ATA) is responsible for analyzing and making recommendations on the most complex petitions filed (reallocations and tax deficiencies) from local and special taxing jurisdictions and consultants for accuracy and completeness. This includes written correspondence or telephone contacts with taxpayers, local jurisdictions and represented consultants. It is the responsibility of the ATA to ensure that inquiries are timely investigated and resolved, including billings and response letters. The ATA also trains lower level staff, reviews and approves Tax Auditor and Tax Technician reallocations and/or redistributions and billings, and evaluates tax distributions that should be investigated, documents/develops procedures, and serves as a staff resource regarding local and district tax issues.

Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.

Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California’s Personal Leave Program.

Eligibility for Promotional Exams

In Addition To Meeting The Minimum Qualifications For The Associate Tax Auditor, Competition Is Limited To Individuals Who Meet At Least One Of The Following Promotional Examination Criteria:

  • Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or
  • Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or
  • Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or
  • Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application.

Under certain circumstances other employees may be allowed to compete under provisions of Rules 234, 235 and 235.2. California Code of Regulations Rules 233, 234, 235.2 and 237 contain provisions regarding civil service status and eligibility for promotional examinations.
