Job Description And Duties
Under the general supervision of the Legal Support Supervisor, the Legal Secretary independently performs the most complex legal secretarial duties for Staff Attorneys, Assistant Chief Counsels, and Chief Counsel of the Labor Commissioner's Office.
Incumbents must have an understanding of the judicial process and filing rules and procedures of local, state and federal trial courts, state and federal courts of appeal (including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and all of the state district courts of appeal), the California Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court.
Duties will include, but are not limited to, proficiently typing, editing, storing, retrieving, printing, processing, faxing and electronically sending correspondence, court forms, legal documents and pleadings (e.g., petitions, briefs, opinions, notices, motions) using various department supported software such as MS Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint; Adobe Pro DC and other desktop technology tools and communication devices.
Incumbents will comply with state rules and regulations, office policies and practices; compose letters and memoranda; process mail for assignments; maintain a calendar of document due dates and court appearances; set up and close legal cases; prepare subpoenas; call various entities; screen, answer and take messages from callers in a professional manner; schedule and coordinate witnesses, court reporters, interpreters for depositions and hearings.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month.
