Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Billing Specialist to support Duke Health Internal Medicine Mooresville. This onsite, full-time role plays a key part in the patient revenue cycle by gathering, recording, and processing critical billing information. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong accuracy, an understanding of medical billing rules, and the ability to work independently in a high-performance environment.

Key Responsibilities
1. Fiscal & Revenue Processing
- Accurately record, gather, and process information impacting the patient revenue cycle.
- Maintain high production levels and quality output consistent with DUHS policy standards.
- Generate or update revenue data that contributes directly to billing accuracy and departmental financial goals.
- Manage assigned work portfolio with attention to revenue expectations and performance benchmarks.
2. Customer Service & Communication
- Initiate and maintain professional relationships with patients, physicians, and internal/external partners.
- Collect and clarify information needed for billing and reimbursement.
- Resolve customer inquiries or issues to ensure accurate revenue capture and a positive service experience.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills in all interactions.
3. Clerical & Administrative Duties
- Operate general office equipment (printers, scanners, fax, etc.).
- Generate letters, maintain spreadsheets, and handle data entry tasks.
- Sort, organize, and maintain electronic and physical records relevant to billing workflows.
- Perform general office support tasks as assigned.
4. Scope of Authority & Work Structure
- Work independently with accountability for daily tasks and deadlines.
- Apply complex billing rules and guidelines accurately in day-to-day work.
- Make decisions related to individual assignments without the need for direct oversight.
- Report to a supervisor/manager for overall assignment direction.
- This position does not require supervision of other staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Postsecondary education or training in billing, accounting, or related fields preferred
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years in hospital access, physician office billing, or collections
- OR a combination of education and relevant experience
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong communication (oral and written)
- Ability to analyze data and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in billing processes
- Ability to maintain professional, service-oriented relationships with patients and staff
- Understanding of and adherence to organizational policies and procedures
