The Grounds/Maintenance Utility personnel is a non-exempt/hourly position that reports to the Director of Property Services. This position is a member of the AFSCME union, under the Property Services Employees master agreement.The Grounds/Maintenance Utility personnel at the Burlington School District work to provide a variety of maintenance and grounds services to meet the needs of the school district.  The ideal candidate will be a team player with a positive attitude, reliable transportation and good time management skills.  Preferred qualities include knowledge of operating power tools and equipment.  

 

In addition to great health benefits and paid time off this full-time position starts at $17.00/hr - $18.50 hr based on experience.  Hours for 1st shift positions are primarily 6:00am - 2:30pm.

  

Hours and work location are subject to change at any time to reflect facility needs.

 

The Essential Functions of this position include:

  1. Operates snow plow and salt truck to remove ice and snow from roads and assigned areas, which require early morning starts and extended hours which includes sanding/salting road and walkways.
  2. Shovel snow, grounds maintenance and other duties as assigned related to facilities and roads maintenance. 
  3. Operates a variety of tools, machinery and equipment and a variety of power and hand tools used in ground maintenance such as shovel, rakes, ax, brooms, and forks, leaf blowers and other tools.
  4. Operates commercial ground equipment such as dump trucks, tractor, front end loader, zero turn mowers, snow blowers, chainsaws and other equipment.
  5.  Mow and edge lawns, weed, maintain flower and shrub gardening and mulch landscape beds
  6.  Trim hedges, shrubs and small trees, remove dead, damaged, or unwanted trees or branches
  7. General maintenance and Athletic field maintenance.
  8.  Follow all safety rules, policies and regulations.  Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  9. Notifies the Director of Property Services of any safety or other issues that may require immediate corrective response.
  10. Maintains accountability in maintaining assigned tools and equipment.
  11. Performs other duties as requested by the Director of Property Services and/or his/her designee.

The required education and experience for this position include:

Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. 

 

Experience:  

 

Minimum required:

  1. Valid Vermont driver’s license.
  2. Working English language skills.
  3. Relevant work experience. 
  4. Demonstrated aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities above.

  • Comprehensive knowledge: Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.

  1. Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments
  2. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing highly skilled movements
  3. Ability to use and care for building service equipment and supplies according to written and oral instructions.
  4. Ability to read and write at an acceptable level.
  5. Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals.
  6. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, meet deadlines and schedules.
  7. Ability to perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor.

EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS/TERMS:

  • SALARY: As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This is a salaried position paid Bi-Weekly with a lump sum payment for the summer period.
  • CALENDAR YEAR: 12 months, 261 workdays (based on start date), upto 8 per day/40 per week
  • BENEFITS: Benefits eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day. BSD Benefits!
  • PAID TIME: Sick Time / Personal Time As per the Master Agreement.
