Long-term Substitute Teacher - Upper School Biology

Bullis School seeks a Long Term Substitute Upper School Biology Teacher to serve from early September through December 2026 (exact start date to be determined). The ideal candidate will have experience teaching biology to a range of learners and value interdisciplinary thinking to guide students as they develop a deeper understanding of our interconnected world through the study of science. The load includes four sections of 9th grade Biology. This is a temporary, full-time position and is not eligible for benefits. The position reports to the Chair of the Science Department. 

The Bullis Upper School Science Department values collaboration and nurtures a culture of continuous growth and collegial support. Teachers keep up to date with current advances in science, teaching resources, pedagogy, and national objectives, and have opportunities to collaboratively research and craft differentiated, engaging lessons for students. Science courses are taught in technology-rich laboratory classrooms in the school’s newest building devoted to STEM and Entrepreneurship. Students engage in inquiry-based experimentation, keep records of laboratory work, and are authentically assessed on content as well as laboratory skills. Each year Bullis science teachers incorporate research, experimental design, and STEM projects in which students practice Bullis' core values while gaining a deeper understanding of the natural world around us. Essential Functions

• Responsible for teaching three classes and additional coverage in the upper school as needed
• Participate and collaborate with teachers and other subject area experts on grade-level and interdisciplinary teams 
• Use technology to blend learning and engage students in active, experiential, and hands-on learning
• Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy
• Create learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning for students with a range of learning abilities using a variety of methods and technology
• Utilize laboratory notebooks, lab practica, and authentic assessments to assess students’ content and laboratory skills
• Use of reflection and feedback aimed at continued growth in the field of teaching and working with young people
• Develop and deliver highly engaging, innovative lessons in course-aligned teams
• Attend Upper School divisional, science department, grade-level, and interdisciplinary team meetings
• Committed to staying up to date on current pedagogical practices and field-related trends
• Communicate with parents, school counselors, and administrators on students’ progress, as needed and appropriate.
• Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standard and provide timely feedback to students
• Use the student learning management system to provide timely feedback, grades, and assignments to students
• Ability to regularly sit and/or stand for long periods and the ability to lift to 25 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodations

Education and Experience

Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related field 
• Minimum of three years teaching experience in secondary education

Preferred:

• Master’s Degree in Biology or related field 
• Teaching certification is not required

Salary:  $300/day
