What are the responsibilities and job description for the PRN - Certified Medication Aide (CMA) position at BUHLER SUNSHINE HOME INC?
POSITION SUMMARY: The CMA is responsible for administering medication under the supervision of the charge nurse. She / he maintains accurate records reflecting medication administration. She/he observes and reports changes in resident physical and mental condition to the charge nurse.
EDUCATION: Passed State exam for CMA. Current state registration as CMA
PERSONAL: professional appearance, responsible, tactful, pleasant, patient, and dependable.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
1. Follows established performance standards and implements facility P & P
2. Implements the “resident Bill of Rights”
3. Attends facility education inservices / staff meetings
4. Assumes responsibility for compliance with federal, state and facility regulations
5. Documents medications provided and the resident response or lack of, timely, and accurately
6. Assesses and reports changes in resident conditions to charge nurse immediately
7. Willing and able to perform basic CNA skills when needed.

FUNCTIONS:
1. Administers meds practicing the 6 basis rights
2. Charts only after the medication has been give, or circles the med. when refused.
3. Charts medications as being dispensed
4. Crushes medications that are safe to be crushed when beneficial to the resident.
5. If a medication has not been given, circle your initials at the appropriate time and chart on the reverse the reason not given.
6. If a PRN medication has been given, chart on the reverse side of the MAR and chart which med. was given, time and reason. Follow up in 1 hour and chart response to med.
7. Flags MAR when a medication change and notes in the 24-hour report book.
8. Reports and fills out a Medication Error Report when a medication error occurs. A medication error has occurred when: any of the RIGHTS of administration is in error. * Medication is considered timely if given within 1 hour before or after ordered time.
9. Passes nourishment at prescribed times. Delivers HS snacks and drinks to each resident room.

11. Remains with resident until all medication has been swallowed unless resident has “Self-Administration of Medication” form in their chart.
12. Dispenses medication according to the bubble pack system and from medication bottles.
13. Restocks spoon, cups, cleans counter of clutter, and stores supplies in appropriate cubicles or cupboards, and wipes off counter in med. room at end of shift.
14. Cleans med. cart at end of shift by using antiseptic toilettes to wipe off top of cart, fronts of drawers and around trash receptacle.
15. Wipes off liquid medication bottles.
16. Restocks med. cups, soufflé cups, spoons, straws, disposable 5 oz. Cups, honey, pudding supplement cartons, etc.
17. Takes out trash from med. room and replaces liner.
Qualifications:Physical Specifications:
12. Works up to 8 hours a day under an hourly wage and expected to work beyond normal working hours when necessary.
13. Sits, stands, bends, pushes, pulls and walks intermittently during workday and subject to frequent interruptions.
14. Lifting any object in excess of 25 pounds will need the assistance of equipment or another person.
15. Works with potentially infectious materials.
