Job Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems and components used in boat construction. This role requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, a deep understanding of boat systems, and the ability to work collaboratively with other teams to deliver high-quality vessels.
Key Responsibilities -
Design & Development:
- Design and engineer mechanical systems and components used in boat construction, including propulsion systems, steering mechanisms, HVAC systems, plumbing, and auxiliary machinery.
- Create detailed mechanical design plans, including CAD models, system schematics, and technical specifications.
- Generate mechanical drawings and work instructions for all relevant departments for new product development and existing models.
- Collaborate with electrical engineers and other design teams to integrate mechanical systems into the overall boat design.
- Ensure that designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.
Materials & Manufacturing:
- Select appropriate materials for mechanical components and systems to ensure strength, durability, and resistance to marine environments (e.g., corrosion-resistant materials).
- Work with the production team to ensure proper fabrication, assembly, and installation of mechanical systems and components.
- Conduct material testing and quality control to ensure that the materials used meet the required standards.
Installation & Commissioning:
- Oversee the installation of mechanical systems and components on boats, ensuring proper alignment, functionality, and integration with other systems.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure the seamless installation of mechanical systems during the boat construction process.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance:
- Provide technical support during the troubleshooting and maintenance of mechanical systems onboard boats.
- Diagnose mechanical failures and perform repairs or recommend solutions to improve system performance and reliability.
- Develop maintenance schedules and procedures to ensure the proper upkeep of mechanical systems throughout the boat’s lifecycle.
Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure that all mechanical designs, systems, and installations comply with relevant safety regulations, industry standards, and maritime certifications.
- Need to be familiar with ABYC standards & regulations.
- Need to be familiar with COLREGS regulations.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design reports, SDS, TDS.
Project Management:
- Support project planning and execution, ensuring that mechanical engineering tasks are completed on schedule and within budget.
- Monitor the progress of mechanical systems integration, address issues as they arise, and ensure that quality standards are met.
- Collaborate with project managers, clients, and stakeholders to ensure that project specifications and requirements are met.
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in mechanical engineering and the boat-building industry.
- Identify opportunities for improving mechanical systems, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing costs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on boat or marine vessel design and construction.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including engines, propulsion systems, HVAC, plumbing, and auxiliary machinery used in boats.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Rhino, Siemens NX or similar) for mechanical design, 2D & 3D modeling, generating mechanical drawings, and generating work instructions.
- Familiarity with boat-building materials and techniques (e.g., composites, metals, fiberglass).
- Strong understanding of marine industry standards, regulations, and safety codes (e.g., ABS, DNV-GL, SOLAS).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality and safety.
