JOB TITLE: Library Media Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Instruction

REPORTS TO: Site Principal

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time; 10-month contract

SALARY: Based on Experience and Education

Education

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree and valid Oklahoma certification required.

Experience

Successful internship or teaching experience in the area of library media.

Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written information; skill in writing required reports and correspondence; ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions; ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply them to practical situations; ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables where limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Embrace the goals of continuous school improvement and increasing student achievement through management of the school media center.
  • Teach information literacy skills to students and administer the reading management program.
  • Evaluate the library program, establish goals, and administer the library budget.
  • Create and sustain a library environment with effective and well-communicated operating procedures that reflect legal guidelines and professional standards.
  • Develop and maintain a library collection that supports the instructional program and integrates library services with the district educational program; select materials in accordance with Board policy.
  • Participate in the instructional program by collaborating with classroom teachers and contributing to curriculum development.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Establish a safe, orderly, and engaging library environment appropriate to student maturity and interests.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans and instructional materials aligned to district curriculum and student needs.
  • Participate in the school's PLC process as appropriate.
  • Build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff; communicate regularly with parents inside and outside the contract day.
  • Follow all district rules, regulations, policies, and practices.
  • Apply current research and best practices to the instructional program.
  • Perform teaching duties and other assigned responsibilities, including co-curricular and extracurricular activities, as directed.
  • Attend meetings as required by the superintendent and principal.
  • Comply with assigned duty times and standards of professional conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Behavior

Ability to use sound judgment in any situation. Ability to deal successfully and rapidly with changes in assignments and properly respond to applicable correspondence and communication. Ability to project a professional district image through in-person, phone, and electronic interaction. Ability to build and foster harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with district staff and the public while achieving the objectives and goals of the position. Ability to handle problematic or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person.

Attendance Statement

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

Environmental Conditions

Primarily indoor working conditions; some exposure to environmental conditions during outside duty.

Physical Standards

Sitting at a desk for extended periods, as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bending. Talking and hearing to communicate with employees and the public in person and by phone. Manual dexterity required to operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, and other office equipment. Ability to lift and manipulate library equipment up to 50 pounds. Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities. Color vision sufficient to identify and distinguish colors.
