Engineering Support – Bridges & Structural Steel

Location: Pickens, SC (Outside Greenville) OR Remote

Employment Type: Full-Time or Part-Time

Position Summary

The CAD Designer supports the Engineering team by preparing routine layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, sketches, and diagrams using CAD software. This role is a critical production support function—owning drafting execution so Engineers can focus on higher-level design, analysis, and problem-solving.

The CAD Designer produces drawings with all required views, dimensions, and details necessary for fabrication and construction. The role requires a solid understanding of drafting techniques and familiarity with engineering terminology. The position involves making basic drafting decisions while referring complex questions or issues to Engineers or direct supervision.

This role will be utilized immediately and plays a key part in bringing detailing work in-house and increasing overall engineering throughput.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

CAD & Drafting

  • Use computer-aided design and drafting software to develop and revise designs
  • Create, revise, and maintain production drawings, including detail and assembly drawings
  • Produce final drawings that include all required views, dimensions, tolerances, and notes necessary for manufacture and construction
  • Create finished designs from engineer sketches and markups
  • Draft detailed multi-view drawings of components, assemblies, and structures

Technical Execution

  • Check dimensions, materials, part relationships, and overall constructability
  • Sketch rough layouts and compute angles, weights, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, and hole locations
  • Apply knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, materials, and physical sciences to complete accurate drawings

Standards, Files & Coordination

  • Update and maintain Drafting and Engineering Standards
  • Set up and maintain an organized file system for production drawings
  • Maintain drawing revisions and ensure database accuracy
  • Communicate with Engineering, QA, Tooling, and Manufacturing regarding new or revised drawings
  • Convert existing production drawings between CAD platforms as required
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

(Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Associate’s degree from a two-year college or technical school OR six months to one year of related drafting experience and/or training OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read, interpret, and prepare technical documents, drawings, procedures, and instructions
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions
  • Working knowledge of drafting techniques and engineering terminology
  • Strong mathematical ability, including:
    • Plane and solid geometry
    • Trigonometry
    • Fractions, percentages, ratios, and basic calculations
  • Ability to solve practical drafting and production problems with limited standardization
  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD required; SolidWorks experience preferred)
  • General computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to learn new drafting or graphic software as needed

  • Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and vibration
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
