What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Finance / Controller position at Brand Builders Group?
Overview
Brand Builders Group is seeking a Nashville-based, strategic, tech-savvy Director of Finance / Controller to own financial operations, reporting accuracy, cash flow visibility, and contribution margin performance across the organization. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is both hands-on and strategically supportive, overseeing day-to-day accounting integrity while building scalable systems, dashboards, SOPs, and financial insights that enable better leadership decision-making. This position is designed as the senior-most finance leader in a lean, scaling organization, partnering closely with the CEO to remove day-to-day financial management and bring clarity and discipline as the company stabilizes and prepares for its next phase of growth. This is an ideal role for a finance leader who enjoys building clarity and discipline inside a lean, fast-moving business.
What You’ll Do
Financial Operations, Reporting & Forecasting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring financial statements are accurate, timely, and decision-ready.
- Translate financial data into clear insights and recommendations for leadership.
- Partner closely with the CEO on budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and contribution margin visibility.
- Provide structured analysis to support decision-making around pricing, headcount, and expense management.
- Serve as the primary finance partner to the CEO and leadership team, providing clear insights that support fast, confident decision-making.
Contribution Margin & Cross-Functional Financial Discipline
- Own and continuously refine BBG’s Contribution Margin framework, including definitions, reporting standards, and forecasting models.
- Identify margin leakage and improvement opportunities, partnering with leaders to drive measurable change.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Sales, Marketing, and Delivery to ensure contribution margin is understood, tracked, and actively managed.
- Help department leaders understand how their decisions impact margin, cash flow, and profitability.
Team Leadership & Partner Management
- Directly manage the finance support team (Bookkeeper, Finance Administrator, and vendor partner), setting clear responsibilities, workflows, and expectations.
- Develop SOPs, training documentation, and cross-training to make finance processes repeatable, scalable, and not dependent on one person.
- Manage and coordinate outsourced accounting and CPA partners for tax planning and compliance, ensuring clear accountability and timely deliverables.
- Review and validate external work for accuracy and alignment with BBG’s internal reporting needs.
Systems, Automation & Compliance
- Operate comfortably inside a modern finance stack, improving automation and reducing manual work.
- Maintain clean integrations between finance and operational systems (especially CRM-to-finance alignment and revenue reconciliation).
- Document workflows and tech processes to ensure scalability and clarity.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, sales tax requirements, payroll and contractor regulations, and maintain strong internal controls.
- Prepare documentation for audits or reviews and proactively identify financial and operational risks.
- BBG operates within a finance stack including DataRails, QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Avalara, Monday.com, and Keap. Experience working within DataRails or a comparable tool is strongly preferred.
You Have Experience That Looks Like…
- 8 years in accounting or finance, including 5 years in a hands-on Controller / Director of Finance (or equivalent) leadership role.
- Direct ownership of the full financial function in a company in the ~$5M–$25M range, ideally ~$5M–$12M, rather than operating as a specialist within a large finance department.
- Proven success building financial clarity for leadership through accurate close, forecasting, cash flow management, and profitability/contribution margin reporting.
- Experience managing both internal finance support and external partners.
- Strong working knowledge of finance systems, dashboards, and automation with the ability to improve integrations and reduce manual work.
- Advanced financial modeling skills, with the ability to turn data into decision-ready insights.
- Highly organized, process-driven, and the ability to create scalable systems without creating bureaucracy.
- Clear, confident communicator who can translate financial data for non-finance leaders and drive accountability across teams.
