What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller (Hands-On, Nashville-Based) position at Brand Builders Group?
Overview
Brand Builders Group is seeking a Nashville-based, hands-on Controller to own and lead the day-to-day finance function of the company. This role is responsible for the accuracy of the financials, the reliability of the close process, and creating structure and clarity across accounting and financial operations. This is not a large-team executive role, it is a working leadership position inside a lean organization. You will be expected to personally engage in the close, reconciliations, and financial oversight while building the systems, processes, and team clarity needed to make finance consistent, accurate, and dependable. Success in this role means that the books are clean and trusted, the monthly close is timely and reliable, the finance team is clear on responsibilities and operating effectively and the CEO is no longer involved in day-to-day financial management.

- Ensure accurate, GAAP-compliant financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
- Oversee revenue recognition, deferred revenue, and recurring revenue reporting
- Reconcile payment processors and ensure CRM-to-finance alignment (integration integrity)

- Provide structured financial analysis and recommendations to support pricing, headcount, and strategic investment decisions.
- Provide clear, simple financial visibility to leadership
Team & Vendor Management
- Directly manage the finance support team (Bookkeeper, Finance Administrator, and 3rd party accounting/payroll support), setting clear responsibilities, workflows, and expectations.
- Evaluate and optimize the use of external vendors, with the goal of bringing appropriate capabilities in-house over time where it improves efficiency and cost.
- Develop SOPs, training documentation, and cross-training to make finance processes repeatable, scalable, and not dependent on one person.
- Manage payroll, outsourced 401K, accounting and CPA partners for tax planning and compliance, ensuring clear accountability and timely deliverables.
- Review and validate external work for accuracy and alignment with BBG’s internal reporting needs.
- Oversee third-party IT vendor to ensure reliable system administration, access management, security controls and cost oversight.
You Have Experience That Looks Like...
- 8 years in accounting with 3 years of managing internal teams and external partners
- Experience owning the full accounting/finance function in a $5M–$20M business
- Direct ownership of monthly close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and forecasting

- Clear, confident communicator who can drive accountability with non-finance leaders
- Process-oriented, steady under pressure, and comfortable operating in a lean, fast-moving environment
- CPA strongly preferred
