A well-regarded credit union in is expanding its mortgage leadership team and hiring a Director of Underwriting to lead, develop, and elevate a high-performing group of nine underwriters across multiple regional offices. This role owns the underwriting strategy, credit-risk integrity, and process excellence while partnering closely with sales, operations, and executive leadership. It’s a pivotal position that directly impacts growth, quality, and member experience inside a rapidly scaling, nationally recognized credit union. This is a role for a leader, not a babysitter. Director Of Underwriting Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and develop a distributed team of mortgage underwriters
- Manage workflow, productivity, and performance expectations across all underwriting functions
- Maintain and enforce credit-risk policies, regulatory compliance, and agency/aggregator guideline accuracy
- Identify and implement process improvements to improve efficiency and borrower experience
- Oversee and participate in decision-making on loans across all mortgage product types
- Run automated underwriting systems and evaluate exception requests
- Partner with Sales and Operations leadership to align goals, communicate decisions, and problem-solve
- Conduct training and onboarding programs to support growth and performance standards
- Host bi-weekly meetings with the underwriting team for alignment and communication
- Develop and maintain investor and agency relationships
- Participate in hiring decisions for all underwriting positions
- Travel up to one week per month between Franklin TN, Evansville, IN, Louisville, KY, and Owensboro, KY
Director Of Underwriting Requirements
- 6 - 7 years of mortgage underwriting experience
- Minimum 4–5 years leading or supervising mortgage underwriting teams
- Expert knowledge of agency guidelines: FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, USDA, VA, Non-QM, and specialty loan types
- Strong command of AUS platforms and credit policy interpretation
- Experience supporting high-volume underwriting environments
- Ability to navigate conflict between sales and credit risk calmly, collaboratively, and decisively
- Must live in or relocate to Evansville, IN, Louisville, KY, or Franklin/Nashville, TN
- Highly skilled communicator
- Bachelor’s degree in business/finance, DE/SAR certifications preferred
