What are the responsibilities and job description for the Systems Administrator position at Boulder County?
Boulder County Information Technology Department is seeking to hire a Systems Administrator. The Systems Administrator provides day-to-day support for core IT infrastructure with a strong focus on Microsoft technologies. This role assists with administering Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, VMware virtualization, and various cyber security tools. The position participates in an on-call rotation and may require occasional after-hours work for maintenance or urgent issues.
This is a full-time, benefited position that will work Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm. This position will work out of 2025 14th St, Boulder, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is exempt.
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
Hiring Salary Range: $89,796.00 - $100,500.00 Annually
Tentative Hiring Timeline:

New employees receive an 80-hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month (Must not have been employed at Boulder County during the 12 months prior to re-hire date to qualify). - Assist with administering Microsoft solutions such as: Microsoft 365, Windows Server, Active Directory (users, groups, DNS, DHCP, etc.)
- Support VMware virtual machine creation, monitoring, and basic management
- Perform routine system updates, patches, and maintenance tasks
- Monitor systems and escalate issues when needed
- Troubleshoot common hardware, software, and access issues
- Assist with backup and recovery operations
- Maintain accurate technical documentation
- Collaborate with IT team members on upgrades and new system implementations
- Respond to service requests following IT procedures
- Participate in on-call rotation; occasional after-hours work may be required
- Performs related work, as required
- May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of
- 7 years of combined education and experience in a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One to three years of experience in system administration or IT infrastructure support.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Strong foundation in Microsoft technologies, including Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
- Familiarity with VMware virtualization and VM management tasks.
- Ability to troubleshoot common hardware, software, and access issues in a structured, customer-focused manner.
- Skill in following documented procedures and maintaining clear technical documentation.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly, work independently with guidance, and collaborate effectively with IT team members.
