Imagine: more neighbors will hear about our food forests, more people will flock to our events, and even better, they'll keep coming back! The Program Intern will support the BFFC program by assisting with stewardship and volunteer recruitment, food forest maintenance, and administrative tasks. This part-time position involves both in-person work at various sites across Boston and remote work.
You'll be a crucial part of building and maintaining a community that is building climate resilience in Boston. This position provides a pathway to professional growth in community engagement, environmental stewardship, and administrative support within a dynamic, mission-driven organization.
Key Responsibilities
Stewardship & Volunteer Recruitment:
- Encourage event attendees to participate in future events by calling and following up.
- Distribute flyers to promote events in neighborhoods and local businesses.
- Draft outreach materials, including flyers and event descriptions.
- Follow up personally with individuals who inquired about volunteering through our website and match them to opportunities.
- Support volunteer appreciation efforts and events.
- Administrative Support: Support data management, including data input projects.
- Food Forest Maintenance: Occasionally support the Maintenance team with basic food forest upkeep and documentation.
Qualifications
- Friendly, reliable, and enthusiastic about community work and the environment.
- Fluency in a second language, preferably Spanish, Haitian Creole, or another major language spoken in Boston.
- Ability and desire to learn and grow in new situations and from mistakes; actively integrates feedback to improve.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Action-oriented with strong creativity and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable interacting with new people and performing physical tasks outdoors.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Familiarity with Boston neighborhoods.
- Comfortable using public transportation (MBTA) independently.
Management and Supervision:
The Program Intern will be managed by the Senior Program Manager, with supervision from other program staff members.
Location & Schedule
- This is a Boston, Massachusetts-based position that requires daily travel between Boston neighborhoods.
- The position requires mostly in-person work, with significant time spent meeting with community members and managing on-site food forest maintenance, including evenings and weekends.
- We ask all staff to abide by the COVID-19 guidance set by the City of Boston.
- Hours: Tuesday 9 am-5:30 pm, Wednesday, Thursday 11 am-7:30 pm, Friday, Saturday 9 am-5:30 pm (8-hour shift with meal breaks). Schedule subject to change.
- The Friday and Saturday schedule is firm.
