Groundsworker - Seasonal
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction and supervision of the Parks Maintenance Manager, or crew leader, perform maintenance and construction tasks to maintain and improve the appearance and quality of the parks and facilities.

- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least two years of experience in park maintenance, landscape maintenance or a related field
- Valid driver's license with the ability to drive a truck and trailer, preferred
- Ability to carry 50 pounds for 25 yards
- A reasonable mechanical aptitude and interest in machinery and equipment used to maintain parks, playgrounds and buildings
- Ability to use assorted hand tools, such as but not limited to, racks, shovels, hand saws, pruners, hammers, etc. in a safe a proper manner.
- Ability to work in all types of weather conditions
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Ability to understand and follow English oral and written directions
Essential Functions:
- Plant bulbs, trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials
- Cultivate, water and fertilize shrubs, flower and tree beds
- Prune and mulch trees and shrubs for improved growth and appearance
- Weed planting beds and tree rings
- Perform turf care including mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizing, irrigating and rolling sod
- Conduct vehicle and equipment inspections
- Build, repair and paint picnic tables, benches and playground equipment.
- Install, repair and paint fences, backstops and play equipment
- Drag, line and prepare athletic fields and courts
- Removal of garbage, paper, leaves etc. from parks and playgrounds
- Perform maintenance and repairs to building fixtures, equipment, furnishings and structures
- Complete and submit daily and weekly reports as directed
- Abide by the Bolingbrook Park District dress code for your area
- Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the park district’s safety program
- Work as a team player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments
- Conduct park inspections
- Water plant material
- Attend all required safety programs and in-service trainings
- Power wash vehicles and equipment
- Work special events as directed
- Perform other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Walking: to pick up trash, mow and trim grass
Sitting: to drive or ride in a vehicle and while mowing grass
Lifting: to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 25 yards while loading materials onto truck, to carry sod, for snow shoveling
Climbing: to climb ladder while painting, washing windows, trimming trees, to change light bulbs
Pulling: to remove weeds; to rake leaves or fields; to open doors
Pushing: to mow grass; to close doors
Stooping: to pick up litter
Seeing: to drive a vehicle or lawn mower; to obtain information from written materials
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS
Must have the ability to read and write in English and organize materials. Ability to drive a vehicle, construction equipment and powered mowing equipment. Must be able to relate to other people in a professional manner. Must dress for all types of weather exposures from extreme heat to extreme cold.

Hourly Non-Exempt position
HOURS
Seasonal laborers generally work during the landscaping and outdoor pool season, which is late May or early June through August. During this period work hours are generally Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. but some weekend work may be necessary. Workdays and hours may vary due to workload or weather. Required to work all special events.
NOTE: Daily work hours can change with little or no notice to accommodate the necessary workload the park district requires.
