Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Using electronic and print sources, including LexisNexis, thoroughly and efficiently assist with legal research and reference questions. Requests may come from Information Services Director, or directly from attorneys or paralegals. Typical research and reference requests include:
- Primary source research into legal questions involving case law, statutory, and regulatory sources
- Background due diligence on companies and individuals
- Location and retrieval of secondary sources such as treatise sections/articles/etc.
- Searches of securities filings on EDGAR or similar sources
- State and National litigation searches
- Obtaining copies of court filings from various states/court systems. Will involve phone or email contact with Clerk’s offices and/or records room
- Obtaining copies of property deeds or other property documents from various Registers of Deeds
- Some filing of loose-leaf and pocket part updates for print library material in the Detroit office
- A four-year degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Social Sciences, Pre-Law, English, or General Studies. Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science or coursework in pursuit of a MLIS preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience with electronic sources in general, legal, business, and governmental fields.
- The ability to research thoroughly while under time constraints.
- The ability to work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal skills – one who can communicate effectively in a courteous and diplomatic fashion as you will work with a wide range of attorneys and other staff members.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Ability to adhere to all general office rules and procedures.
