Summary
This role will provide technical leadership across engineering, design review, construction, and commissioning phases, ensuring compliance with California utility requirements (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E) and industry regulations.
The ideal candidate has deep expertise in high-voltage systems (69kV–500kV ), substation design, protection and controls, and grid interconnection.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Electrical SME for new high voltage substation and transmission projects
- Provide technical leadership on substation design, equipment selection, and system integration
- Review and approve electrical design deliverables including one-line diagrams, schematics, and protection designs
- Lead electrical scope for greenfield substation projects (69kV–500kV )
- Oversee design and integration of power transformers, circuit breakers (SF6, vacuum), and bus configurations
- Ensure proper equipment ratings, insulation coordination, and system protection schemes
- Coordinate with California utilities (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E) on design reviews, approvals, and standards compliance
- Support utility interconnection processes and resolve technical issues
- Review protection and control philosophies, relay settings, and SCADA/communications systems
- Support and review system studies including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and grounding
- Provide construction-phase support including RFIs, field clarifications, and troubleshooting
- Support commissioning activities and energization readiness
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (California preferred)
- 10–15 years of experience in power or utility infrastructure
- Extensive experience with high-voltage substations (69kV–500kV )
- Proven experience working with California utilities (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E)
- Strong knowledge of substation design, protection systems, and grid interconnection
- Experience supporting EPC or utility side projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree
- Experience in owner’s engineering or technical advisory roles
- Background supporting renewable energy interconnections (solar, wind, BESS)
- Familiarity with CAISO processes and requirements
- Experience with substation commissioning and startup
