Position Overview
Birch Agency is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to provide specialized instruction and support to students from birth through age 21. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity for a professional passionate about empowering individuals with visual impairments to reach their full potential across educational and community settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct instruction in braille, assistive technology, and adaptive skills for students with visual impairments.
- Develop and implement individualized lesson plans and IEP goals based on student needs.
- Conduct Functional Vision Assessments (FVA) and Learning Media Assessments (LMA).
- Adapt classroom materials and environments to support accessibility and learning.
- Collaborate with educators, administrators, and related service providers to ensure comprehensive student support.
- Provide training and guidance to families and school staff on strategies and accommodations.
- Support early intervention services aligned with developmental goals.
- Maintain accurate documentation, case notes, and assessment reports.
- Participate in IEP meetings, staff conferences, and community outreach initiatives.
- Stay current with best practices and advancements in visual impairment education.
- Bachelor’s degree in Visual Disabilities or related field required.
- Active Florida Department of Education certification in Visual Impairments (or ability to obtain and maintain).
- CVI Assessment and Intervention Certification preferred
- Prior experience working with visually impaired students and/or early intervention preferred.
- Strong knowledge of braille instruction, assistive technology, and adaptive strategies.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with computer systems (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn internal databases.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the community as needed.
- Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs and supporting student mobility when necessary.
- School-based and community settings supporting students across a wide age range (birth–21).
